33 engine noise

Our 33 has an engine noise(not a mechanical noise), its a harmonic sort of a droning.
Its related to how much throttle I have on and as soon as I lift off a bit its gone,Its also worse when the eng is cold and a lot quieter when the engine is fully warmed up.
I have lined the floor and firewall with dynamat , this made it better inside the cabin,
the exhaust is a single system and a small stainless muffler that is about 6 inches in diameter and a foot or so long,it has always been on. the exhaust is not touching the chassis anywhere.
IDEAS ??

Clueless without seeing-hearing it . That said try taking the fan belt off and make a QUICK drive .

Did you check for u-joint slop ??

load orientated ... bearing in the driveline somewhere? I noticed mine doing a similar thing the other day quite a loud humming -drone noise, normally I have the radio on so dont notice it so much. Turn you radio up or get Carol to sing louder..?

new U/joint , no vib or noise from there, Fan belt ,it would not know if the power was on or off you would think.

Re: 33 engine noise

I once traced a harmonic noise (low buzz) that was RPM sensitive to a loose baffle in the muffler. Drove me crazy until I isolated it.

Lawry The muffler sounds like a Coby I run one but its 24" long I like the sound but its a bit loud for a long haul ,your running more horse power now so is it that ,

Re: 33 engine noise

Ted, I went to the muffler shop today and maybe will look at fitting a bigger newer muffler, shame as the whole system is stainless and fits up realy nice.

Agree ,
For the amount of things it would positively eliminate and a relatively simple task I would still try it .
Your call .

You can hear other things better also with the belt off .

Re: 33 engine noise

Is the noise present, when the car isn't moving? If so, it eliminates any drive train issue and you can probably find it with a stethoscope.

Don’t rule out the front main drive bearing in the transmission .

Had similar noise in a 34 Ford once.

Re: 33 engine noise

I like flathead V8's but I've never owned one and don't know how they are mounted on the frame, or if they used rubber in the mounts. Is it possible the rubber has gotten hard or worn, and the engine could transfer more vibration through the frame and cause a harmonic/droning sound ?
