Seat springs: paint or no?

Going to be doing the Upholstery on my AV8. Do you guys prime the springs or leave them natural?

I use that cheap rattle can black from Walmart.

Re: Seat springs: paint or no?

After I had primed and painted some seat springs the wife asked why would you bother as it's getting covered up anyway. My reply was "Because I know what's under the new upholstery".

Haha. Yeah, I hear you. Just trying to protect them I guess.

Paint is the way to go especially in a roadster.

Thanks, Ron. Will it improve fuel economy?

Gary, you are one of a select few that actually do the proper thing in places folks can't readily inspect.

Why wouldn't you paint them given they are exposed to airborne moisture? You'd sure kick yourself when the rust bled through the upholstery fabric if you didn't. For what it is worth, they were painted originally.

Yes Dave, of course you are correct. They were painted originally and if not necessary to do so, I doubt ol' Henry would have bothered.

Paint them. Even if each has its own burlap bag like 40 Fords do. This are "before" photos.

It's just one of those things that will bug you if you don't as you only do it once.

Re: Seat springs: paint or no?

Rust bleeds through sometimes if there isn't enough material between it and the covering. Light colors could get stained through. Definitely apply some corrosion protection. Anyone that pulls this old stuff apart can sometimes see this. Any metal that corrodes should be protected. If the cloth ever gets damp, even by accident, then it will apply that directly to the metal.

When I am at a car show one of the places I look is down inside the doors through the window opening--- it's surprising how many perfect outside prize winners restoration with nothing done to restore the innards of the doors

Re: Seat springs: paint or no?

I have always painted my seat springs with black Rustolium rust preventative spray paint. Once a seat spring starts to rust, eventually it can break at that rusted area. Paint the seat springs. Proactive is always better than reactive.

Will do. Thanks, all!

When I did my 32 delivery using original seats and springs I had the springs and frame parts powder coated gloss blsck. I was warned the powder coating heat would ruin the springs but they were fine

Re: Seat springs: paint or no?

When I bought the Glide Engineering frame and springs for my '39 p/u everything was painted black. Considering what it cost it wouldn't have been right if it was bare metal.

Considering paint will add to the overall weight of the car a slight reduction in economy will take place. However having two carbies on that big cube power plant and how hard it will be to not use them to their full potential will make it hard to get economy anyway. LMAO

Re: Seat springs: paint or no?

How about adding the flex stuff to the paint that is used when painting plastic bumper covers on later cars from 2000 and newer?
