8ba generator mount modifications
 

Did a search, but could not find what I am looking for. I have 8ba engine with truck water pumps running the narrow belts. Has anyone modified the original generator bracket and fitted an alternator? Any info with pictures would be appreciated.

Just curious. What year and model truck water pumps are you using? I thought all early truck pumps were wide belt. Perhaps, later 1950's models were not. Did you change the pulleys to narrow belt? Could you post a photo of your set up? You can't use the OEM Ford generator bracket with an alternator. Must buy the correct bracket to adapt alternator to flat head. You'll also probably need to buy new belts. Here's a few brackets.

Perhaps info. below will be helpful. The pumps are 8BA early Ford pick up. Be sure to make sure your water pump belt aligns with your water pumps.

My 8BA has the OEM early Ford pick up truck pumps that came with wide belt pulleys. I bought the aluminum alternator bracket and modified it so it would sit lower down on the engine. It uses one long wide belt pulley for both water pumps and the alternator. The fan hub pulley and other non stock pieces you see are home made. However, a very similar fan hub pulley is available from DRAKE for about $160.

If you´re going to run an alternator there are brackets available...
If you´re not in the mood to make something with a personal touch.

Or you could add a couple home made plates to the original bracket.

As purchased from the previous owner. (Delco 12si alternator)
In the past 5 years I've had it it hasn't "broke" so I haven't messed
with it. I think they just added material to the strap, lengthening it.

51 Merc that is exactly what I was looking for. I had read couple years ago where someone use a Chrysler alternator and original generator mount and then someone had use a GM alternator. Would you mind passing along how you did that.

Here is my project don't get excited about the fan pulley being sideways I just stuck the generator mount up there and it is not flush.

The water pumps on the engine above are 1951 Mercury.
Your engine might have a 4 inch crank.
Plus, the intake manifold has 4 bolts for the carb like mercury had.
8BA's used the 3 bolt carb.

These are more views of a second one I have, BUT, If I were to do it again I would consider making a cradle to limit the fore and aft movement and using a longer strap as has been done in the post #6 by 1948F-1Pickup above.

51-Merc, thanks for posting I'm going to see what I can com up with this weekend. I think there may be a hybrid of post #6 and your design that might work.

I knew I had read couple of years ago someone putting a Chrysler alternator on flathead. Look at page 59, only drawback is it takes a regulator.

I have an EAB engine that came out of a Car (narrow belt) in my Truck. I had to have Car sheaves pressed onto the Truck WP's. I'm using a typical horseshoe alternator adapter.

One thing to consider with narrow belts is that some 10Si units need more HP to drive them at rated output than a single narrow belt can provide. When I first start my engine, there is a brief period of belt squealing when the alternator is kicking out the amps to recharge the battery. My alternator is rated at 65 amps, about the smallest 10Si available (and way more than needed for my truck).

Tony, NY I would like to see more pictures of how it is mounted. Did you trim the original generator bracket down any.

The first pic is from 5yrs ago, so I'm trying to remember. Welded the recessed areas on the bracket and ground them flush. Drilled a hole through that area for a piece of thd rod that went in through the ear of the alt. A spacer was needed to align the pulley. Did some grinding on the bracket. The alt is cradled by the bracket so it can't go anywhere.

Is that the Ford alternator with external regulator you are using? Been looking at different alternator designs last night.

I am also very interested in using the Chrysler alternator. Have you had any issues with it? Could you please take a few more pictures of how the alternator is craddled on the bracket and the spacer you used/made?

How about a power gen. They come in wide or narrow belt. Personally I don't like the look of an alternator on a flathead

I think the finned alternator looks good with the finned aluminum cylinderheads. I think it helps tie the package together.
