Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me Had Uncle Max rebuild my 97, what a beautiful Job. Only a fumble finger like me could mess up a nice new carb day by somehow dropping a nut down the manifold when replacing it. After trying all the magnet retrieval attempts to no avail, I spent a couple of hours removing the manifold and there it was on top of the #4 cyl. valve spring. Moral to story, Don't store the nuts on the studs especially if you have 82 year old fumble fingers.
At least I mustered the guts to admit it. |
Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me Glad you were able to find it. Is the washer accounted for?

Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me Could've happened to anyone.....Murphy's law.I've always been amazed how far things can travel when dropped and where they wind up. Has anyone seen my vacuum brake spring?

Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me Ok, trying to follow this one. How can you drop a nut down the intake manifold and find it on a valve spring! I understand the dropping part, do it all the time myself, just don't understand the path from the intake manifold to the valve spring, they're not connected. The manifold leads to the inside of the cylinders and valve springs are located in the valley under the manifold. What am I missing here?

Me too!!!!! That is a bit of a stretch. R |
Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me I'd assume it fell out of the manifold onto the spring when he pulled the manifold.
I no longer use washers on the carb studs for this very reason... |
Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me I Don't know but there it was, maybe because you have to turn the manifold every way but loose to get it past this and that on the way out. By the way, where the hell do you think those passages lead to on the way past the valve spring, by the valve into the cylinder, JSeery and Ronnie?
|
Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me LOL, It sure isn't past the value springs!!! The intake passage goes through the block ports into the valve pockets under the valve heads. The stem of the valve goes through the valve guides into the valley under the intake. The springs are held on the valve stems by the retainers and keepers. If anything can get from the intake ports into the valley where the springs are you've got big problems!!!

Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me I can look for a more detailed view of the passages if you are interested?

Found a view of the intake passage but it does not show the spring. In the passage drawing you can see that the value guides both support the valve and provide a seal between the intake port and the engine valley.

Well, that wasn't the drawing I wanted! It's ok, but doesn't show much of the guide.

Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me Hey DD,
X2...Pretty easy to deduce this ,eh ! Matter of fact, with gyrations as you explained...I'd like to see someone explain how it wouldn't end up as Keith explained ? Keith, You done good for octogenarian , eh ! I've had several ops on each hand to 'help' add to age thing..no complaints tho, just saying that you've got good reason...Murthy be damned ! Oh, btw, had Max to two 81s for me....they were so purty that I don't have the heart to use and get them dirty. So, they set where I can look at them time/time..with other jewels ! |
Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me He found the nut. Why get all twisted up? He's 82 years old and working on his car and solving problems.
Power to ya Keith. |

Re: Uncle Max day--Fumble finger me It seemed more of an exercise in trying to prove he was mistaken.
If I misread it, I apologise. Mart. |
