Fan Belt Squeak My fan belt is not too old but it is starting to squeak a bit. What can I use to dress it? I have some belt dressing in a spray can in the garage but it makes such a mess when I use it. I remember years ago there was something like a crayon that would help. What do you say?

Re: Fan Belt Squeak Try bar soap. Works every time.

Re: Fan Belt Squeak I recently had the same problem and tried all the common dressings, none worked.
I ended up sanding the belt, nice and quiet now. |
Re: Fan Belt Squeak Try WD40. Just spray a little on belt at top of generator. Very little.
Has always worked for me. No mess. Enjoy. |
Re: Fan Belt Squeak With engine running SLOW, A bar of bath soap held on belt edges..

Re: Fan Belt Squeak Hallo Marty, the squeaking comes when the V-belt slips. If you apply a lubricant such as soap or WD40, you will not hear it squeak anymore, but the belt is still slipping. The solution is candle wax. Rub the flanks of the V-belt with it and the belt runs noiselessly and without slipping.

Squeaking is not just caused by slipping fan belt. The Model A’s generator isn’t always in perfect alignment with the other two revolving pulley’s. As the belts age, the edges dry out, and the slight mis-alignment causes a squeak. I am never 100 percent right, but I’ve been at this for a long time. Try the WD40, just a very little on generator pulley. Enjoy. |
Re: Fan Belt Squeak If your worried about slippage, use Gasgacinch Gasket Sealer and Belt Dressing https://www.amazon.com/Gasgacinch-44...s%2C199&sr=8-1

Re: Fan Belt Squeak Thanks for all the replies. I did spray with WD40 a week ago but I think that is a temporary fix. The squeak came back. Now I have a bunch of things to try.
I can't wait to get started. Marty |

Re: Fan Belt Squeak Might try a new BX40 or BX41 belt. It is the cogged type and may help.

Re: Fan Belt Squeak We used to use Door Ease, it comes in a stick and you rub it on the belt edges. https://www.amazon.com/AGS-DEK3-Door.../dp/B000CIFVN6

Of course this was back when they had service stations, cash boxes and service attendants. Thanks for the memories. |
Re: Fan Belt Squeak you can cure a squeaking belt by cleaning it and the pulleys. soap and water.
|
Re: Fan Belt Squeak I have used all of the above, except the sanding. Nothing seemed to work except putting a new belt on. I'll have to try the sanding next time. Oh, I did (do) have the cogged belt.

Re: Fan Belt Squeak ATF you do not need to dress all the belt it will migrate around by itself when running . This works for me and seems to be a long lasting cure .
