29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question 3 Attachment(s)
I am heading over to the upholstery shop in the morning and I realized that I don't know what the original/authentic seat pattern is supposed to look like. I don't mean the material pattern. I mean are there pleats--no pleats--one pleat--please help.
See pix of seats that were in the car when I got it. But I have no idea if they are authentic/original style or not. I have checked out several pictures of interiors on FordBarn and all of them are different |
Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Check out the picture at the right hand bottom corner at this link for
a front and rear seat picture. http://www.model-a-ford.com/proj_8.shtml Bob |

One of the Fordbarn members sent me pictures of his interior (see below) and it looked more like my car except for the front seats. Then I looked at the Judging Standards book on page 12-16 (see below) It says "seats (plain panel)" So I am confused to say the least!!! |
Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Here are some pics of the back seat of my Oct '29 Tudor. I had it all along under the 1960's naugahyde (sic) upholstery that came with the car. Did know the back seat was still original until I pulled it off last year.

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Sorry. In trying to upload pics I got a security error. Notified Fordbarn, and will try again later.....

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question '29 Tudor seats do not have pleats. Go with the standards.

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question It depends on when your car was built if you go with the RG & JS. Look at the front of your gas tank, it should have a date stamp might be upside down. Also look for numbers stamped on either subrails or crossmember subframe of the body. RG & JS show a change in July 29. Your garnish molding color changed when the interior color changed. fred93, what is the revised date of your RG & JS? Your page 12-16 doesn't look like my Revised 2016.

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Still plain.

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Greg is correct for April, plain. Are you restoring to restoration guidelines?

I asked this question of Doug at Lebaron bonney some years ago, and he said he had seen original seats come in to the shop with one horizontal pleat, multi vertical pleats, and plain with no pleats. My tudor did not have pleats, so I had the new covers made with no pleats.

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Oh snap! I am so happy to see this post. I am a fair upholster and am making my interior from scratch. I did not like the pleats on the sample pieces I sewed up and had decided to go plain. I was just waiting for all the comments when my fellow enthusiast saw them. Now I can just say I made them in the earlier style.

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question I just looked in the Judges Standards book and there were two types of seat upholstery for the 28-29 Tudor. Plain and piped (rolled pleats). The 1928 had piped seats (3,3,8,8) and the 1929 had the plain seats. In 1930, the Tudor came out with the piped seats (5,5,11,11) again. According to that, I have the wrong seats (piped) in my 1929 Tudor. :(

This upholstery thing has been very confusing. I am amazed that no one has straightened it out before now and put it into a simple chart! Even the JS book is vague on some points. The other thing that I have trouble understanding is why Ford went to all brown interiors in July 29. I guess Ford was not very color coordinated in those years. |

So is it determined that 1929 Tudors had PLAIN seats, no PIPES? If so, and I assume this is the original of my back seat, dies it mea that I have a 1928, and not a 1929? The engine is a 1930, and the frame number is too rusted to read. It was titled as a 1928 back in the sixties, but no original title was found. I've gone by other clues (vacuum wiper, fender mount tail light) that it was really a 1929..... Are there any other clues to look for?
Thanks |
Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question *does it mean* sorry....

Re: 29 Tudor seat upholstery pattern question Fender mount taillight weren't in 1928. Maybe later in 29, but not early. Plain seats in early 29, piping in later 29. If you aren't sure, it's a good investment in a RG & JS latest revision. I knew before I removed my interior for evidence it was not original upholstery even though it looked like it could have been. The give away was seeing some of the door and rear panels had signs of a previous stitch.
