1956 manual trans input shaft
 

Hi everyone. I have a 56 Mainline with the 3 speed manual trans. and 223 six. I recently dropped in a 272 and put a new clutch kit from Rock Auto on it. Is there any difference between a six cylinder car transmission and the v-8 car transmissions? Specifically the input shaft length and spline diameter? Thanks!

Installed the engine and it went in too easy, and I have no engagement between the engine and transmission in gear, like the splines aren’t touching the clutch disc. I’m going to pull the engine again and check. I got an original bellhousing and went with an oem clutch kit.

Did that 272 possible come from a Ford truck? If you used the truck bell housing, which is about 1” deeper, the car transmission input shaft would probably fail to reach all the way into the clutch hub. Just throwing possibilities out there.

.did you try the clutch on the shaft before you installed it.you dont need to pull the engine to fix this.

Mac VP, is correct same thing happened to me , wanted to install A S-10 T-5 in my 53 f-100 , truck bell is about an inch to deep .

They might have given you a clutch disk for an older car, 1948 & back, or for pickup, much larger spline hole.

If swapping, you would first have to ID the TRANS TYPE and then match a disc to the input shaft and the plate to the flywheel. All same DIA of course.

Well it looks like my kit I got from rock auto has a 1 3/8 spline diameter and my input shaft is a 1". I have found a disc from NAPA that is a 10" disc, 10 spline, 1 1/16 diameter spline, I think it should work, 1/16 shouldn't cause an issue--right?

Only if you like watching clutch pieces fall out of the bellhousing :rolleyes:
Find the right size replacement parts.

The splines on the clutch disc must matched the input shaft on the transmission. if you have no luck locating what you need, call Fort Wayne Clutch, Fort Wayne, Ind. , tell them what you have, they can, and will fix you up. https://fortwayneclutch.com/

1 1/16" is not close enough to 1" to work. Your clutch disc should engage the splines and move back and forth effortlessly, but it should not be loose. You shouldn't be able to wiggle it or move it up/down. Always test the disc on the input shaft splines before you put it together. You want effortless back and forth movement on the splines, but no slop.
