Flathead 1951 V-8 Rotatable valves
 

I'm not sure that this is the place for this post, but I am looking for a few valve spring retainers. The listed part number in the Ford manual is 6514. Unfortunately that is the same number used for the earlier retainer which does not utilize the sleeve (pn: 6517) to hold the locks (pn: 6518). I suspect that there is a prefix and suffix missing from the manual. The one carried by most of the suppliers are for the earlier style which retain the locks without the sleeve. Would anyone who has ,or knows of a source for these please PM me please?

You need the parts catalog for the 8ba years, I don't have one. I just have the earlier years, 48 and earlier, often referred to as the Green Book. It would provide you the prefix and suffix for a given application.

How many do you need?

I call that the washer, and the center sleeve is the cone. Inside the cone is the keepers.

FoMoCo played with those things for a while so replacement parts are generally either in the later car or truck parts books. 1951 was the change over but there was another change in 1953. The truck engines may have several different styles of rotator sleaves & spring retainers.

Those four digits in post one are only part of the actual part number. The first rotator type valves for cars used spring retainer P/N 1BA-6514-A with the sleeve P/N 1BA-6517-A so I'd look for those if it's a car engine in 1951 or 52. If it's a truck engine then things can get more complicated depending on what year it was. The two different designs have to be used in sets with the correct valves for them. The difference was due to the hardened valve seats being completely eliminated in some car engines and intake valve pockets on some truck engines.

doing away with the mushrme stem & going to split key sure made it a lot ezer to do a valve job

Just a follow-up in case others have this issue. I found the retainer and sleeve in Dennis Carpenter's catalog. I also want to thank those forum members who took the time to respond to my issue.
