Leakless water pump ID. Hi all, how can you tell if the water pump is the leakless kind? I want to grease it but don't know what kind of pump it is. Thanks!

Re: Leakless water pump ID. That is a good one...Ask the previous owner!

Re: Leakless water pump ID. 2 Attachment(s)
The leakless pumps have a common characteristic which is a modern front bearing that prevents the pump shaft from moving. The pictures show Jim Ruppert's leakless water pump that employs a modern ball bearing.
I make my own by using a modern front roller bearing and the latest leakless parts sold by my local parts supplier. I lube the front bearing just once during assembly of the pump using synthetic wheel bearing grease. I lube the rear bushing twice a year, and I also have a water pump lubricant in the coolant. |
Re: Leakless water pump ID. There are two kinds of leakless water pumps. One requires grease in the rear bushing and the other one does not. I have the second type and it will not take any grease in either fitting, no way, no how. On mine the grease fittings are included for appearance only. Page A-140 in the Snyder's book shows both types.

Re: Leakless water pump ID. I have a question why would anyone want a leakless water pump anyway it's a Model A there supposed to leak there, that's just my feeling on it as the originals you can still get to not leak that much anyway.
The only leak I want to get rid of is the leak in the bellhousing the one that leaks from the cotter pin and there's a way to get rid of that also, it's just I haven't got that far as of yet but I will sooner or later as I know how to do it it's just I'm working on other things right now. Re: Leakless water pump ID. There are more then two types depending on who and when they were built. Look at the parts and ones that are listed in Snyder's catalog, even that has changed over the past few years. Today someone could put together a leakless pump, that would have the lipped seals, stainless shaft and original bearings up front. There were kits sold that had a press in rear seal assembly that was had a fake adjuster machined on, some with a bearing assembly that was pressed on the shaft then in to the front housing, some that the rear bearing pressed in but had a separate piece that looked original and was screwed on like original. Some required grease some did not. "Leakless type", would be kinda vague as there are several ways to get to that point.

Re: Leakless water pump ID. So, I can't ask the past owner, he's dead! I guess I'll try to grease it and see what happens!

Re: Leakless water pump ID. If you back the adjusting nut off loosely and then it leaks, it's not a leak less pump, it wouldn't take much idling time to leak.
