Trying to save a "raised deck" v-8 !!!!!!! UPDATED!! Sorry for screaming it out but I just got a "raised" deck flathead this afternoon. It was on C-List for the last few weeks and I talked to the auto recycle yard owner 2 weeks ago when he told me someone was going to buy it. Kept seeing it for sale and finally called again, deal fell through of course. Had a felling so offered a hundred for it which he accepted. When getting it today I noticed the missing spark plugs and the water around the holes. Got it home and found it turns over, all pistons working. Pulled intake and found lots of water in lifter valley, drain plug was loose, no oil just water, enough to fill 1/2 a paint tray. Looking for suggestions for what to do next, I don't have time for a few days so can't pull it all apart yet. The yard owner said some young guys brought it in and he had no idea where they got it from and yes it did rain 4 1/2 inches last night which explains the water. Some castings in the 1938-1940 production had a "VOID" of metal around the area of the intake ports. After machining it may appear that the port is higher but it is NOT. The intake manifold/valley cover is in exactly the same position as other flatheads. Stop the insanity. lol

Here's some pics. Looks worse because of the atf/acetone combination I applied liberally before I realized how much water there was. Not a Mercury block and will measure it tomorrow to check if sleeves were removed. Think I got there before it was toast, have used a lot of paper towels to get as much liquid out. Think I'll have to get the rest apart tomorrow night.

Re: Trying to save a "raised deck" v-8 !!!!!!! If it has any "ring groove" in the cylinders, cut or hone them out before removing pistons. Otherwise you may break the lands on the pistons.

More progress this afternoon into dinner time. Have all the pistons out, crankshaft and oil pump removed. Initial measurements show the bore is STANDARD, mains and connecting rods on crankshaft are STANDARD. No brand on pistons and obvious signs that this was rebuilt at one time. Think I got it just in time to get rid of all the moisture, bottoms of some lifters are rusty as well as some camshaft lobes. Aluminum timing gear, will be getting to valve train next week, lots of WD-40 and other lubes applied. Maybe the Flathead God's are in my favor.

That looks like a heck of a deal for $100 ESPECIALLY is the crank and bore is STD. The engine in my 1933 Avatar was deemed for the scrap yard. I did nothing to it except put the correct aluminum heads on it, painted it and have run it many hundreds of miles since. Makes you wonder how many good Ford parts are scraped daily throughout the country. Thoughts like this make me lose sleep at night. |

All in what you need. Maybe rebuild, maybe run it. Many get into the good intention trap of redoing something only to let it sit forever. If you are going to machine it. Maybe leave another bore for the next guy. Looks like you might have a nice one! . |
