Reamer Specs
 

Hey guys, Im looking to buy a king pin reamer for 40 king pins,
I found this, are these the wright specs for what Im looking for ?

No, regular Ford car kingpin reamer is .814

I was thinking .812, but wait, that’s the size of the kingpin. So .002 clearance?
I use a critchley piloted adjustable reamer, and just go by feel for clearance, I know, it’s not exact, but it works.

Have it done by an automotive machine shop that has the
correct and best hone. There should be "0" play.
It's worth the money and piece of mind.

Unless you plan on doing a bunch of spindles for new pins, it's cheaper to take a set to a machine shop and have it done right. A guy gave me a reamer and I did a couple of sets. It was never as accurate as having it done in a machine shop.

Elwood, you are never going to get your kingpin bushings reamed correctly with a standard reamer. No matter what you do they will be misaligned. What you need is a reamer with a tapered floating sleeve. The sleeve will center the reamer, so each hole is along the same plane. These reamers are fairly expensive, about $150. As others have suggested have it done.

Fords of the early V8 era are 13/16". Mercury cars form 1949 through 1951 are 15/16". A pilot that big in post 1 is likely for some other make or a truck size like 1-inch.

I bought this reamer for about $50 and I’ve done a couple sets. It measures 25/32 to 27/32 and it’s adjustable and has the pilot sleeve. I think a lot cheaper than a machine shop, and I get to do it myself. Oh and a good excuse for buying a new tool. :)

I have my king pins out on my 40 wagon. How do I tell if I need to replace them. They look original but don't appear to be loose but maybe I am not checking them right.

There are many tools available to ream Ford kingpin bushings but reaming is a last resort.
Both bushings should be HONED simultaneously. They will last TWICE as long that way.

If you have to ream them, this is the proper reamer. It is a PILOTED reamer made specifically for this job. It is the right size. No adjustments.
Only one problem, you may have trouble finding one. They used to be available from Sears Roebuck, Western Auto, Monkey Ward and others. Not so much any more.
The lettering on the reamer is:
