1935 Radio Mounting
 

The radio in my Tudor was installed with generic bolts.
I replaced them with an original set of t-bolts and large washers. These are to long and the bolt sticks up past the nut.

Looking for info on proper radio installation.

Maybe the "generic bolts" were used because the radio chassis is not correct for the 1935 Ford car. If you can, show us a picture...

checking the description in the EFV8 35-36 book it looks as though the chassis is different.

Your radio appears much like the 36 radio. The washers for mounting look to be too small in diameter. Do you have the star washers under the nuts? The special mounting bolts should extend past the end of the nuts somewhat. How long are the mounting bolts?

Bolts removed from a 36, special thick/oversized nut with small star lock washer, had d-washers, replaced them with round ones from 3rd gen.
Mounting flanges on radio are correct for t-bolts

I believe the '35 radio chassis had an integral speaker. Where is your speaker located?...

As a general rule the radios in the EFV-8's and later were dealer installed. According to the info on pages 116/117 of the 1935-36 Ford Book the closed cars had speakers mounted in the windshield header, the book also goes on to state that '35 radio's are very common in '36 Fords. The correct bolts for Ford Philco radios is shown on page 117 of the Ford Book.
My '36, a late August 36 car has the '36 lunch box style of radio, I have a '35 style of radio in my stash of parts.
I did not like the original long bolts sticking up through the cowl of my car so I cut them down. the original bolts have large heads, the same size as the head nuts so I put chrome acorn's over the nuts.. Looks a lot cleaner.

Back to my original question about the bolt length.
My bolts are as described.
The mounting location on mine is at the base like the original radio, with that in mind it seems as though they are excessive. It looks as though the original dash pad is in tact and Not compressed down...

So since the bolts are 2 1/4” long were they made excessively long?

The bolt length looks right to me. It's possible that your firewall insulator has compressed more than normal due to it's age.

The hanging bolts used in 1934 and 1935 Ford radios were T headed and they locked into the flange on the radio side. The T bolt measured 2-1/4" from under the head to the end of the threads. The washer was 2-1/4" in diameter which is quite large. Here are some photos of the correct T bolt.

Thanks y’all.
The radio chassis is a 1937 with a 35 control head.
Best guess is the original padding is crushed down allowing more bolt to show.
Will modify the pitted set of bolts and look for a nice set to hang onto.

I have a '35 with original radio. I know the long bolts look out of place sticking up so high. This is not a misfit arrangement. You need the long bolts to drop down the radio so it can be removed. Installing the radio you merely slide the radio under the drop-down holt heads and draw the radio up to the insulating board. If done this way you should have no cuts in the sounding board. If the length of the exposed bolts bothers you could cut a couple of pieces of short rubber tubing and slide it over the bolt threads to give things a somewhat finished look..

If it helps any, I too remember the radio mounting bolts sticking out a long way on a very original '36 I bought in 1959. That, and the clock in the rear view mirror stick in my mind.

Thank you, it makes sense that the bolts are longer to aid in hanging the chassis and then drawing it up. Putting a piece of rubber tubing over the ends until a show to save my arms is a good idea.
On with my quest to find a nice set of hardware.
