REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK I'm trying to find some time typical outside rear view mirrors for my 1930 AA Truck. I want them large enough so I can focus on surrounding traffic and when reversing. Any suggestion would be appreciated. |
Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK My 1930 AA has west coast type mirrors. I know they aren't period correct but have been there for 70+ years. It was in a movie a few years back and they asked me to remove them to look "1930". Took them off and after the movie put them back on. I have saw some vintage photo's of AA's that had West coast mirrors back in the day that were freight haulers.

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK Not actually correct but solves what I consider a safety problem. Depending on your bed width and rear sighting obstructions (headache board) Mount a standard AA mirror on both sides, using the correct extension so you can see. This is my plan for my just about restored, as a driver, '31 AA. I have a problem not being able to see out the right side of the truck. Your mileage may vary...

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK How about a 5" or 6" or 8" Convex mirror, they're available in black or stainless.

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK 1 Attachment(s)
I've looked at the original mirrors that were available, https://aafords.com/aa-body-types/body-details/mirrors/ but they are too small and I think that's a safety issue. I drive my truck frequently and would feel much more secure on the road being able to see the cars around. In addition, I can't turn my head like I could when I was young  I think I would like a rectangular mirror sitting vertical. Not a West Coast type, but with one arm only and in size approx. 6"x10". The bed is 10" wider per side than the body, but if you mount them high I don't think the arm has to be very long. Where do you find round mirrors, 5" and up? |

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK I found this mirror locally. It's 6x10 and adjustable in any direction.
https://www.abkati.se/catalog/produc.../category/567/ The big knob can be replaced with a bolt. Are the Ford mirror brackets being reproduced? |
Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK 2 Attachment(s)
I think it would be an easy thing to make a mirror bracket like AA-17697-B. Machine a tapered rod and weld on the fittings in each end and this bracket will fit the 6x10 mirror I suggested.

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK 1 Attachment(s)
It's not actually a tapered rod although that would probably be close enough.

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK You are absolutely right Bob, but as you said it's close enough.
It struck me that a marine stanchion would be the perfect rod. Just make the hinge mount, weld it on and you'll have a beautiful bracket. https://www.niro-petersen.de/en/stan...costs-418.html |
Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK Another option. Not sure of my grandpa made/bought these rods and screwed them into the mirror arm or the previous owner. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0bb1e3671a.jpg

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK I've been known to tell people I still have the original black and white mirrors on my car, since the color mirrors did not come out til much later...you'd be surprised how many people fall for that one.
I caught more then one taking a sly peek just to see... But I really like the young guys (who think they are motor heads) nod in agreement. |
Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK The mirrors for my Early 1930 mount on the door pillar, not the hinge. I would love to find the mirror brackets for it.

Re: REAR VIEW MIRRORS for AA TRUCK Hello!
Since the bracket arm will be 10+ inches, I'm afraid the hinge mount version will be too weak and flexy, so I think it will be better to install the bracket on the hinge pillar instead and have a sturdy tapping block inside the pillar :) |
