suspension squawk
 

My fully restored 40Merc suspension squawks . It has new rebuilt original shocks and shackles. Also the metal sheaths over the springs. It has the center springs lubing fillings.
what next?

Did you grease between the leaves BEFORE putting the covers on??

I did not do the build. I can see a little grease squeezing's out of the grease
fitting

If the tin covers were stapled on as original you can forget ever getting grease in between the leaves. Covers were not one of Henry's best ideas but a lot of 40's/50's cars had them. . Best bet is to remove them (not easy) and try spraying lube between the leaves. In the 50's I worked at a gas station lubing cars and we sprayed squeaky springs with a mix of kerosene and waste oil. Would last a 1000 miles. JMHO

Thanks oldford2 Supposedly I can pump 140 wt thru the center fittings.

I lived in Hawaii in the 6's i saw lots of old cars with bad upholstery. Upon questioning they say Heh dakind Bruder dis is Hawaiian undercoat, Meaning spraying used oil underneath the entire car and they rat raced in the volcanic dust to hold the oil in place.

If they are original you will not be able to pump anything thru. But try it.

You should not be putting grease in between the spring leaves! Ford used a special lubricant for this and it is not grease. You can make up a mixture, but the easiest way to go is SlipPlate. I believe it also comes in tubes.

I don't have the lubrication charts for the later models, but before the addition of the fitting in the center bolt Ford recommended spraying the springs with Graphite Prenetrating Oil, L in the 32-35 diagram. After the fitting was used the correct lubricate was Ford M-4628, K in the 41 diagram

Back in my younger days when me and the wife were still active we had an old box spring that made god awful squeaks. Though lubrication was never an issue we had to retire that old thing because the kids were getting wise to what we were doing.

The only really good solution is one you will not like. Remove the springs and covers and clean the spring leaves and start over. You can also try driving a wedge between each leaf and spraying them. None of this is simple or easy or fast.

The squeak in the front end of my '41 was a dry shock. Maybe check your rebuilt units to be sure the seals are holding up.

I have used Slip plate on my 39 truck. A great help. I have to check the spring center bolt I think they may be too big for the lube to pass

The problem is if they have every been greased with something like axle grease it is very difficult to impossible to push it out with a proper lubricant. Even when working at it's best this system pumps the lubricant to the center of the springs. It's not really needed there, it's needed at the tips of the leaves. It is the tips that are squeaking.

Everything new to the 40 Merc. Very little sign of springs being lubed. One s
attachment had a star washer allowing the grease to squirt out. Noise is like dry surfaces contacting.
