Do not worry about the price Vic. Make a offer. He can only say no. Like i always heard, it is only worth what you can get.;)

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

I am finally getting around to rebuilding the steering box in the '39 Ford Convertible Sedan (I know you'll appreciate that Chuck). Mike and Keith were over on Friday afternoon, so they gave me a hand pulling the steering box, etc. out of the car. We started taking it apart and I put it in the parts cleaner and immersed it in (what I refer to as the liquid of unknown origins, aka my home made cleaning solvent)... This afternoon I continued cleaning. I don't have a steering arm puller so, I tossed the assembly into the back of the '51 F-1 and drove over to my friends garage. It took all of about three minutes to remove the steering arm, it's easy when you have the correct tools...;) I got home and continued to clean 75+ years of built up grease, etc. out of the steering box... Now, I'm too tired and greasy to continue... it's tough gettin' old, :( not only do I get tired too quickly, I also tend to forget just what I'm doing... LOL Here are a few photos of the disassembly, before any cleaning... https://scontent-mia1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...d8&oe=562B6E9B

Vic: It's good to finally see a picture of you with greasy hands. (There I go assuming again, Can't see your face, only "Your" greasy hands. LOL Don't wipe your hands on the upholstery.

Lawson, it's true, I do actually get grease on my hands occasionally... But, they don't call me the Tom Sawyer of Flatheads for nothing...;) lol

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

I'm getting ready to drive Joe's '48 Merc down to Sarasota this weekend. I pulled her out of the garage only to discover a large amount of transmission oil on the floor... I want to check the level and refill the transmission, problem is... I've got my '39 CS on the lift, with the steering box out of the car and various other steering components disconnected. So, in order to check the transmission oil level in the Merc, I'll have to jack it up and put it on jack stands...:( That's the easy part. Question is; how do I get oil into the transmission, with even less space available??? I guess I'll have to buy one of those pressure (guns, for lack of a better name)... Do you guys know of any other viable solutions?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Vic,
I've used one of those oil suction guns for years. It is the only way I've found to add lube to transmissions and some rear ends. They are pretty reasonably priced if you shop around.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

The parts stores have ~8" plastic flexible tubes that screw on a bottle. Use a wide, flat bottle that will get up by the floor and higher than the fill opening. It should only take about a pint or less.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Ted & Gene, thanks for your suggestions. I've had suction guns before and they were not as good as I had hoped but, I give them another try...

Thanks John, I had one of those, it didn't even last through the first gear oil change... I don't know, maybe it was operator error... (wouldn't be the first time LOL ;)) I'll give it another try...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Hello Vic. I have one of those retro looking small ketchup squeeze bottles, made the opening a little larger and use that for adding gear oil. The smaller size makes it pretty easy. Steve

Yes, we know the source of the leak,;) and we will fix it before we fill the transmission again. Just trying to make the refill job easier...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Prospects for good weather (sunshine) are slim for this weekend so, I'll be focusing my attention on the '39 CS steering box rebuild. I've had the column lock soaking in solvent, to try and loosen up the two small screws. Hopefully I'll be able to remove them so I can relocate the part on the new shaft... Should be fun...;)

The hits (rain) just keep on coming...:( This tree, next to the garage, uprooted and fell, away from the garage thankfully however, it also did some damage to the septic system... The rain isn't expected to let up until the 11th of August... I sure hope no more trees fall...:(

Ugh! It just doesn't want to let up, does it. Seems like its been raining for weeks now and more to come. Usually it gets real bad every time I open the garage.

Maybe some gator tail soup would be the ticket! Stay safe and dry Vic!

and it literally just started pouring here again while writing this.....

I know, it is really getting old... I think we'll go out for some blackened Gator Tail tonight... Should be real fresh...;) We may have to swim back to the house... LOL

Just in case you were wondering what the Cigar City Flatheads do on rainy Saturdays...;) Here, some of us are helping Mike install a 'Y' Block, he just built, into a '55 T-Bird... Mike found a baby squirrel in the garage so we went up to the local Wall-Mart for some Kitten Formula, to feed our new mascot.:) We messed with the 'Y' block for a while, and decided it was time for PIZZA... :D Cliff took us to a Pizza place, not far from where the '55 T-Bird lives, and Mike treated us. Back at the garage, we squeezed the 'Y' block into the Birds engine bay... It wasn't a Flathead, but we still had fun. Thanks to Mike, Cliff and Keith for an enjoyable day.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

I got a little bit more done on the '39 Ford CS steering box rebuild today.:) I had to have a few things machined, before we could reassemble the unit. We put the new worm gear and shaft in the steering box, using all new bearings and races however, we used the original roller gear and shaft unit. The inner diameter of the 'new' NOS... worm and shaft was smaller than the OEM shaft however, not enough to cause a problem. The headlight/horn rod still fit so, we are good to go for reassembly and installation. ;) I had to make a gasket for the oil filler and adjustment plate. I topped of the gear box with Corn Head grease and primed and painted the unit. Hopefully, this weekend we'll install the steering box, make final adjustments and go for a cruise (if the rain stops...) Here are a few photos of the fun... :)
