water pumps

Hi Fordbarn, I am removing my water pumps to have them modified by Skip,
the pumps are also the front motor mounts. What is the best way to support the motor while the pumps are out? thanks

Re: water pumps

I always use a bottle jack with a 2x4 between the jack and the front of the oil pan. Just jack up the engine enough to get the pumps free, don't forget to remove the bolt inside the pumps.

Re: water pumps

I use a phone book as a stout, soft, and flexible pad between jack and pan.

Hi Vic, thanks for the reply I was not sure if I could use the old pan. Thats the way we did it back when, but I did many things the wrong way.
Thanks again,
Jack

Just remember to write all the numbers you might need while the pumps are on vacation on the wall...

I also used Bruce's suggestion of the phone book when I did the pumps on my truck. Worked out very well....I'll just have to save one or two since phone books will probably be obsolete sooner than later.

The phone book is a good idea, I never thought of that.

When I did my pumps I made a jig out of 2x4s think of an upside down u. I made it so the short upright 2x4s would sit on the bolt flange of the oil pan. It works great if you need dimensions pm me. You only need one jack in the middle. Chris

Re: water pumps

Whatever you use keep it up on the front edge of the pan. A short 2X4 that don't go from side to side or a phone book in the middle of the pan could allow the pan to get a dent in it. G.M.

Re: water pumps

G.M. we use the 2x4s made up like an upside down u that goes near the front of the pan the two bys lift the engine and you put the jack in the middle of the u. You can leave the engine jacked up while you wait for your pumps to get repaired nothing ever touches the middle of the pan Chris
