53 merc oil pan in 35 pu frame I am trying to install a 53 merc motor in a 35 pu frame using Pete and Jakes 34 front end with vega cross steering. the original merc motor had a center sump pan and it interfered with the tie rod and steering arm. I have purchased a rear sump pan here on the Ford Barn but it will not clear the crossmember. Is there diferent rear sump pans ? the center sump pan cleared the crossmember just fine. Help thanks steve

There are only 3 rear sump pans for the late flathead that I know of; '48-'52 truck with the large clean out, '53 "stepped" truck rear sump, and '49-'51 Mercury. Scroll down in the link below to pictures 24-28 for a visual, and place the cursor over the little yellow icon for text and zoom. :) http://www.flatheadv8.org/bellhousing.pdf |
Re: 53 merc oil pan in 35 pu frame Thanks V8 Bob The pan that was on the motor looks like photo 26 on the left (Ford ) the pan I bought looks like photo 28 (Merc) so maybe I bought a Ford not Merc. How can I tell without going in the motor? Will the pans interchange?

Re: 53 merc oil pan in 35 pu frame Steve, I used the center sump pan with a longer pitman arm clears everything. you may need a spacer under the front motor mounts, it may help with lower radiator hose alignment also. Good luck Paul

Re: 53 merc oil pan in 35 pu frame Thanks Paul. It looks like I do not have any options. I do have a pitman arm from Speedway that has an offset. I will try that and see. thanks again. steve

Re: 53 merc oil pan in 35 pu frame 1 8ba pickup truck pan
2 Shim motor up ½” or so I believe the motor (59 or 8ba) sits to low in a 35 or 6 frame. I believe in 37 ford changed the cross member when they moved the pumps down to the block. |
