Cold weather In fairly cold weather.....5 to 20 degree range... This has now happened 3 times and I'm not sure what's going on.The 30 coupe is in an unheated garage and when the outside temperature is in this range, I have antifreeze come out during a period of sitting in the garage for a few days.
This morning, 5 degrees, there was about 4 ozs on the ground at the end of the drip pan. . I started the car up, pulled out of the garage and the radiator was circulating fine. I oringinal thought the hoses were leaking but changed them weeks ago on the second time I saw this. . This morning....a leak ... Any thing I may be overlooking. I have -20 degree anti freeze in the radiator . Tom |
Re: Cold weather Tom, mine does the same thing. Antifreeze will leak from a fitting where water will not. I am not sure if a hose will contract in the cold like a metal fitting however, no question I experience the same issue.

Re: Cold weather Tom
in cold weather things contract like hose connections etc. when its warmer or the engine is heated up those connections expand. look closely with a mirror under and around your hoses, and all coolant areas for a trace of where it is coming from. a lot of times it runs down from other areas up higher. it could just be a matter of re snugging the clamps |
Re: Cold weather At one time I had water come back out of the grease zirk for the water pump. Easy to overlook.

Re: Cold weather Not only could it be a hose connection, it could well be the drain valve or the coolant pipe itself.
|
Re: Cold weather Check that lower pipe carefully. This past summer mine had a rust pit open up and I lost my coolant. I use vaseline on the outside of the pipe and outlets, and on the inside of the hose clamps. This helps the hoses to tighten without pinching and bunching the rubber.
BTW, I understand rubber expands when cold and contract slightly when warm. |
Re: Cold weather In extremely cold weather -20 or more, the water outlet gasket weeps a little.

Re: Cold weather Our '29 would weep antifreeze at the hose connections when it would get real cold. Lost about 2 quarts one winter before I noticed it. Car was stored away from home then.
Snugged down the hose clamps and we were set to go. |
