I've found a legitimate reason to use a 12v alternator on a Model-A
 

I believe I have finally found a legitimate reason for using a 12 volt alternator on a Model-A. :D :D As I am preparing to replace the upholstery in my daughter's Model-T speedster this Fall, I have decided I am going to add Dorman Seat Heaters (part #: 628-040) under the seat covers as a way to provide a little warmth when she is driving on Spring & Fall tours.


This has got me to thinking that many Model-As (-both open & closed bodystyles) that are driven in colder climates could benefit from using these heaters. Unfortunately they are not manufactured for use with 6 volts, and a stock Model-A style generator could not keep up with the amperage requirements however for those seeking an alternative to those unsightly (i.e.: drafty / smelly) manifold heaters, this may be a workable solution. Thoughts??

So... what is wrong with wearing a fur coat from the 30's? Period correct, warm, soft. PETA approved, classy, conversation starter, big pockets to hold Ford wrenches, great to lay upon when fixing something under the car and they work with 6 Volt systems!

As a long time off roader, I really appreciate heated seats. They will drain a battery if not wired through the ignition switch. Ask me how I know!

You could use a gasoline heater from a 1960 Corvair. But then, it was a Corvair.

While it will usually work , six volts is a bare get by .

The legitimate 6v item in a 12v model A? the wiring harness,high ampacity..I dont buy the seat heater stuff,the girl wants a cell phone charger..

When I bought my F150 I told the dealer that seat heaters were a must. He couldn't find one equipped the way I wanted, that had seat heaters, so they installed aftermarket seat heaters. And they are fantastic! Especially if you have a sore back. But that's the only reason I would go 12 volt.

yes it will,but modern electronic components like consistent voltage..so do horns,bulbs,points and coils,just about every electric component lasts longer with smooth,constant current, a 12v alternator provides it inexpensively.

That being said,6v has come along way..with the advent of superior electronics and light emitting diodes a 6v system is more relevant today that it was 20 years ago.And its authentic,a starter doesn't sound the same,that alone is reason enough to stay 6v..

The electric seat heater I put in my Sport Coupe is great. I can feel it getting warm before I leave my driveway. I only have it under the seat cushion as it is to difficult to put the other element in the back of the seat. I have a hot water heater under the seat but that needs to have the engine get warm before it works.

Nahh, kids now use the small charging packs to charge their phones when out in public.


I guess that is where the Powermaster or alternator hidden inside a generator case comes in.

If the 6 amps burns your bum, then charge up a 12 volt battery before you leave and when you get back.

Some campers here run an electric blanket via an inverter off a 12 volt battery all night. On low/medium draw isn't much.

Just run the generator at 12V. Doubles its power from 86 to 172 watts (regulated). It should be able to handle that wattage (72W), especially with any high-CP headlights off.

I use the original generator on 12 volts with no internal modifications . The generator charges in AMPS . A six volt generator will charge a twelve volt battery in a model A with no problem . I use the Fun Projects can style voltage regulator . This voltage regulator replaces the cut out and couldn't be easier to install . I adjust the third brush for a 10 amp charge and the regulator regulates the charge as needed , much like modern cars . If a person needs to run several high draw accessories this set up may not be for you . I really like mine !!!!!!!
