Vapor lock

I solved what I thought was vapor lock by searching older posts here. A new condenser solved the problem on the 8BA in my ‘40. Thanks all! There’s a wealth of knowledge here.

I agree. The experts here often say fuel problems are really electrical. Mine was a coil.

The carburetor is the number one thing blamed for engine performance issues. Usually only guilty half the time at best. It's an easy thing to blame.

Vapor lock is an interruption in the flow of a liquid through a fuel line or other pipe as a result of vaporization of the liquid.

Yes my Dad used to do that in his old flathead. Also he recons it got rid of any carbon build up in the head area. not sure if it worked though ?.

Re: Vapor lock

I remember about 75 years ago waiting in line for a ferry boat
to cross the Delaware river near Chester, Pa. the engine stalling.
I believe they changed the coil and it started. Back then every
one carried a spare coil and fuel pump. I found old Fords sitting
in fields that were so rusty the hood and grill was completely gone
from rust. The chrome hood stainless and the grill stainless bars
were laying on the ground and looked like new. Several of the rear
of the bodies were so rusted the bottom of the trunk and floor was
missing and sitting on the gas tanks was a coil and fuel pump. I
don't know if the gas 75 years ago vapor locked?? G.M.

I was having vapor lock problems on my way to Florida last fall. On the way back to Ohio in the spring, I added a gallon of diesel to each tank of gas when I filled up along the way. No problems with vapor lock. And it ran just fine!

Re: Vapor lock

The first five cars I owned when I was a teen were all Chevy's, 1938 through '46, never had a vapor lock. I bought my first Ford in '51, a '41 Ford 2dr. When the heat of summer came upon us, I found out what vapor lock was. When I bought my '36 coupe in Sept 52 did not have any vapor lock problems until the summer of '54 when I moved to Vegas. I put an aux electric pump on the '36 and ended the vapor lock problems that the Nevada desert heat brought on.
I have been a faithful believer in aux electric fuel pumps since '54 on most of my old vehicles, cars, trucks and boats.

Re: Vapor lock

Electric pumps solve my coil and condenser problems every time. Latest was last week in Wisconsin and Illinois in 98 degree weather.

Re: Vapor lock

Interestingly at a certain temperature diesel "freezes" and turns to jelly. The trick is to add a gallon of petrol to a tank full of diesel
