Looked at this old truck today. Someone save her

Had a call from a friend that rescued this 48 pick up from long time abuse and neglect. Thought I might be interested in another project but don't see myself doing this truck. Weather and time has taken it's toll and unfortunately looks like it needs lots of love, sad really! Found sitting in a farm field and hadn't been on the road since 1958. Maybe someone can find the courage to resurrect this old truck. Contact me if any one has interest and I'll pass it on.

First of all it is of the earlier series. '42-'47. I have seen vehicles in much worse shape completely restored. BUT, in today's world one would really have to love the restoration 'journey' AND be able do all the work himself for it to be a viable restoration candidate. In other words investing 20 grand would be just the beginning, and for that twenty, you could buy a VERY nice 1/2 ton jailbar truck, ready to drive. If it was a '32-'35, things might be different. All that said, I can't remember ever buying something that ran, never mind restored. So who am I to try to discourage anyone? In my situation I have tons of used parts and my 'restoration bar' is set kind of low, like 'painting it with a brush' low.

Some folks have a parts stash for those all ready. The orange paint may indicate Government owned and good maintenance during that period. Perfect trk for a young future driver. Newc

From here it looks very doable to me. It looks a lot better and more complete than my 1945 1/2 ton did when I got it. I spent four years and some $ but got a lot of pride/satisfaction when it was done.

My 39 looked that bad , I did the mechanicals and am driving it like it is ,I hope someone younger than me will save it . I think it is a 46 or 47 .

That’s what I would do. Fix the mechanicals and drive it / show it as is. True restoration is cost prohibitive. Unrestored survivors are cool! Many people appreciate seeing history on display.

If that was local to me I'd be all over it.
A full restoration would not be the aim. Just make safe and driveable/dependable.
Mart.

That is way better then my avatar roadster to start with. I had to weld 10" of new metal all the way around the body and put in new sills and floor. Sat for 30+ years in the rain, top and bottom lips rusted off the frame. I finished this car long before new steel bodies could be bought.

always had a soft spot for Jailbars ( trucks not the local lock-up), since I was a kid and seeing one used as the local fire engine.

Re: Looked at this old truck today. Someone save her

Wish i could save it. Love "JailBar" pickups. A friend had a 46 in 1960 with a built 59 A in it. It was a real hot rod and in the winter, he'd take doors, tail gate & hood off and pull ice shanties on Lake Erie with it.
Right up yer alley Mart......
