49-51 Ford Convertible Model O.D. Solenoid

Does the 49-51 Ford CONVERTIBLE model , with the X frame chassis require a special Overdrive Solenoid ( with a flattened corner shape) to clear that X frame? I remember the mid 50's Ford CONVERTIBLES required that special shaped O.D. solenoid in order to clear the frame , not sure if the 49-51 models did as well.

Don’t hold me to this as my ‘50 convertible doesn’t have an overdrive, but I seem to recall the convertible OD was a different OD from the non-convertible (X member absent) cars. The convertible OD positioned the solenoid at a downward angle to clear the frame vs the standard OD where the solenoid mounted essentially horizontal. Again, don’t hold me to it as I’m really digging in the archives here; I’m not getting any younger.

Hi; I understand that they are mounted differently ... require a special casting. Newc

This link to our parts drawings shows the particular mounting of the 49-50 Ford convertible arrangement for the overdrive solenoid. I believe this was not used after 1950 converts due to a change in the frame.

The solenoid is also specific to a convertible. The shaft needs to be rotated one flat if I remember correctly or it might just be different. Either way a regular one will not just bolt up. There is a weep hole on the cover and that needs to be positioned at the bottom.

Frank.....so is adjusting that shaft a difficult operation? Can that be done without complete disassembly of the solenoid?

No you need to disassemble it but not a big deal. Here is the Ford drawing

Frank....thanks for your info on this. Could I ask you to send that diagram to my regular email?
This Ford Barn system does not allow me to magnify the attachments so they are readable, I think I can do that if its an email attachment. Hope that isn't too much trouble for you to do. [email protected]
Thanks again !
