clutch return spring on a 1941 Ford car
 

I am doing a restoration on a 1941 car frame and having trouble identifying where the clutch return spring (and brake pedal return spring for that matter) are supposed to be hooked on the frame. I am looking now for the correct clutch return spring and also have some questions. Looks like the '41 thru '48 springs are the same one, and I saw one advertised as the single (same one) used for both the brake return and the clutch return. It was just over 7" long as I remember. I also found a much longer (17+ inch) spring designated for the 1940 ford car and the '41 ford truck. At any rate, if someone who has a '41 ford car could give me some advice, that would be great. A picture if possible would be worth a thousand words. On my frame, there just is nothing behind (to the rear of the car) the clutch pedal for the spring to hook to . . .

Your best bet is to check with one of the NOS suppliers here on the Barn and get an original spring. I don't know on the 41, but earlier years the spring goes into holes in the frame.

Check for a hole in the bottom lip of that little crossmember that goes from the X to the side rail, in line with the rear transmission mount. That is where my '41 clutch spring hooks.

The clevis pins for the pedals generally have a deep groove cut around the circumference of the pin head for one end of the spring to fit into. The clutch spring will connect to the pin head and then aft back to the frame as mentioned. The brake pedal actuator arm is low on the pedal assembly so the spring has to go forward and may connect to the frame cross or body framing. I have no photos but maybe someone else can help with that. There is usually a hole drilled for the spring hook end to fit into

I hope these help.

The spring is about 7" long and is just under tension when the clutch pedal is not depressed.

The helical section is about 4.5"long

Both the clutch and brake pedals use the same spring 7.6" long

Thanks guys. My frame seems to be missing that horizontal cross section that your spring is attached to. Nice to know I'm not just loosing my mind. And, thanks for confirming about both clutch and brake springs being the same (with the correct number).
