Failed valve spring retainer (cup washer) 2 Attachment(s)
I had my 24 T Fordor engine rebuilt about 2 or 3 years ago. I have put about 1000 miles on it since. Now, within the last 6 month I have had 2 cup washers fail. See pics below. I have been messing with model Ts for a long time and I have never seen this before. Is this a new problem that has just shown up with me? Or, has it been around a while and I just haven't been aware of it? Could it be poor quality repro parts? I do not know exactly what my engine rebuilder used. Any advise would be appreciated. Re: Failed valve spring retainer (cup washer) Is the builder still in business? If so give a call. That doesn't look familiar. Does it have repro parts, real heavy springs or just old age and improper care?

Re: Failed valve spring retainer (cup washer) There has been a lot of complaints about repro spring retainers and pins. To soft. Get good originals if possible.

Re: Failed valve spring retainer (cup washer) It has happened a lot over the last 100 yrs. It was one of the week points of the T motor.
Especially if the valve springs are stronger than stock. The original retainers last a lot longer than the ones in your car did. I use chevy valves, retainers and keepers. You need to open the guides to 11/32. |

Re: Failed valve spring retainer (cup washer) Jim, I have done three motors now with Chevy 350 exhaust valves. I used Model T springs, Ford 8N tractor spring retainers and Chevy keepers. As stated you will need to ream the guides and use adjustable lifters. You can get the reamers and lifters at the T parts suppliers and the retainers at Yesterdays Tractors parts.

This is a comparison of the two failed cup washers and the two originals. There is a very large difference in the thickness of the sheet stock they were made from as you can see in the picture. The thickness difference is so large fortunately, that it should be easy to detect the bad ones. The ones that failed lasted about a 1000 miles. Jim in San Jose
