Distributor Interchangeablility

Hello Barners! Is a 46-8 distributor interchangeable to a 24 stud 1940 block?

Yes, but you may need a "button" spacer due to the difference in how much of the distributor sticks out the back. All the major suppliers sell this. You do know that the 46-8 distributor is a 2 bolt and you will need to change timing gear covers as the 40 is a 3 bolt one. There are also adapters instead of changing the timing gear cover but I would choose changing the cover.

Thank you very much for the info! I am trying to help a friend out who thinks the 40 engine in his 36 coupe has an earlier distributor. He thinks my 46 type distributor is called for on his 40 engine. I will go tomorrow and see what he has.
