If the gap is too tight. (can't really tell by picture)
On the door post side of the hinge, on the inboard screws place thin washers or 'U' shims between the hinge and the post. This moves the hinge point forward. The other way requires some massaging with a sledge hammer. |
Re: '51 door gap 51 Merc.... Ok I understand that. I looked for shims to remove and move both hinges forward... but I didn't think of just adding them on the inside to move the pivot forward. I have to fix the floor and I was trying to get the gaps all even before I brace it and cut out the bad spots on the floor....... Thanks for your help!!..... Mark

Re: '51 door gap flatfordV8: I have seen the following done.
If the A-pillars and floor are structurally solid and the door opens ,closes and latches without any "droop", carefully grind back the edge of the door and then reweld and finish grind and file the edge to the gap you want. It's not as scary as it sounds. "Tack weld and let cool. Tack weld and let cool. etc." However, try the shim idea first. |
Re: '51 door gap 19 Fordy.. I thought if that but I knew I would open up the door skin. I may have to do both ideas because the door lip hits the body by the jam. There's no gap at all. The car may have been in an accident sometime in the past. Thanks for your help! ..... Mark

Re: '51 door gap With the door open, try gentle application of a Porta-Power from the upper hinge area of the jamb to the door pillar where the clearance is tight. Go easy and keep checking the fit. Use some wood blocks to protect the metal. I have one you could borrow if you want to try this. :)

Re: '51 door gap I tried a porta power and put as much pressure as I dared. Didnt seem to mive much..... Mark
