Here's the thing..... that damage is in the center of the worm...... in other words when you're supposed to be "tight on center" it's going to be rough
on center when adjusted correctly. The worm should be changed out.
That type of damage is usually because water got in the box.
Just curious- could you feel that roughness in the steering wheel?

Here's I nice one for you..... I couldn't feel this but the box wasn't properly adjusted either.

Thanks guys, that’s what I thought.

1948f, I bought the box separate, not in a vehicle. Without resistance it felt fine.

Should I get a new worm from Mac’s or look for a good used? The other “gear” is also bad.

If you do not have tools to remove and replace the worm gear it is much easier to purchase a shaft and gear together. Also if the top bearing race is bad a Dremel can be used to make a relief under it for a punch to remove.

van pelts sales has rebuild instructions and also parts.

Thanks John, I'm replacing all the bearing, I didn't like the "soup" that came out of the box. To get the race out I ran a couple beads of weld on it. When they cooled and shrank the race popped right out. ...a trick I learned from the HAMB.

It is not likely but if you can find a good ORIGINAL Ford gear, it should last longer than the aftermarket ones. I had 2 aftermarket ones fail in less than 5000 miles.
When checking with the Rockwell machine in the remaining good areas, the aftermarket ones were 8 points softer.

Sage advice from Pete. The original Ford ones are the best. I believe those worm gears are in virtually all of the Ford boxes from '37 up to the early '50's. I would check with Fred Wilner at SSO, I believe he has NOS ones, but said he was out of sector gears.

Got my NOS sector from Fred maybe a month and a half ago.
Didn't converse with him about the worm. I got my NOS worm shaft from
Macdonalds Obsolete, off of their eBay store.... which was a lucky score.
