Timing Marks?
 

Hello folks. Let me start by adding this is my first adventure in A land.
I am getting started on my miller ohv conversion and I have a 350 cam from Stipe I will be installing. My question is, is the timing pin just used for finding TDC. If I want to pull the cam, should I line up the pin mark in the cam gear with the mark on the crank then pull cam?
Also recommendations on a good engine overhaul manual would be appreciated.

Just pull the cam, and yes the dimple is for TDC.

More than TDC on the crank. Many times ignition issues are caused by being 180 deg. out. The dimple on the cam gear guarantees that the cam lobes are positioned for end of compression stroke where the rotor & cam can be set to open the points.

It doesn't matter where the marks are when you take it apart, just make sure you have them correct when you re-assemble it.

Roger that. I was under the impression for some reason the marks would be in alignment at TDC.

You might want to run a metal timing gear if you are running a over head.

If you are using a Steve Serr aluminum head with his rocker arms, you might end up with more than desired valve lift because the Stipe cam, I believe, is for a flathead (no rocker arm advantage) Check with Steve and/or Bill before proceeding.

Jim I think you are right, I use Bill,s cam on my home built head, with chev V8 rockers. Had coil bind on the valve springs. I then had Bill regrind for a over head. it now works very well.

I did when I purchased the cam. It's a ohv cam that he recommended with the 1.5 to 1 ratio Miller set up.
