USB charger socket for 6 V system

Is anyone aware of a USB charger socket that will work with a 6 V input from a stock Model A electrical system ? I did buy an inexpensive one, but it apparently needs more than 6 V to keep charging. Most of the time it just flickers on and off.

Did you get the polarity correct? If you are using a positive ground system, will have to isolate the charger socket as most require a negative ground.

The polarity is correct. The socket I bought has a plastic body, so easy to isolate.

You may need a noise filter ahead of the charger. Model A electrical systems are too noisy for most modern electronics without some serious filtering first.

I bought a 6 to 12-volt inverter, fused it and mounted it under the car on the back side of the cross rail that is just behind the battery. From there, I ran two wires (neither can touch ground) up to the cab that terminates with one of the cigarette lighter style sockets that just about anything can plug into.

Read through this, it will hopefully answer your question and provide you with a solution:

Just try a different little plug-in USB plug to put the charge cable into. I have found some that are more picky about their input voltage than others. From my limited trials, until I found one that worked, it was the cheaper units that were less concerned about the volts input; the more expensive units didn't like 6 volts. The GPS and cell phone charge on 5 volts, so they will work on 6.

I did the same as Magicbox51. I have the one that has multiple usb ports so I can run the Garmin and charge a phone with no issues.

Ditto: and one can mount the angle bracket under the gas tank with professional grade 2 sided moulding tape

I can charge my iPhone OK but the 'Traffic' on my Garmin does not work on 6v. Probably has something to do with the charge cord is also the antenna for the Garmin Traffic?

Re: USB charger socket for 6 V system

Thanks everyone - I’ve bought another inexpensive charger socket to try, and also have bought an inverter to boost input voltage to the charger socket to 12 V - if the second charger socket also doesn’t work. I do run a Fun Projects 6 V regulator on the generator - which works quite well - not sure if that would affect operation of the charger socket - which is connected directly to the battery and positive ground on the frame.

I made my own from some scavenged parts and a 5V regulator. Works great and it was a fun project. I sealed it all in a little box and mounted it on the firewall.

Re: USB charger socket for 6 V system

I just installed this USB charger socket from Amazon, and it works just fine on the stock 6 volt positive ground electrical System on my Model A. It even has an on/off switch.
