Sun machine power supply
 

I have a older sun machine that uses a 6 volt battery,,,,I don’t use the dwell or rpm gauges as I have a external dwell and rpm meter,, would like to rig up a PS to eliminate the battery,,anyone have a drawing that might work
If I knew the amp draw would help,,, Tks

If the battery powers the motor, it is going to take a bigger power supply than for just running the rest of the machine. For the motor the supply has to be able to handle the inrush current which can be several times the running current.

You can get a 0 to 30 volt, REGULATED, variable, 20 amp, DC power supply off eBay for about $100.

Battery chargers are not usually regulated so the voltage can vary widely.

The battery does not power the motor, it is 120volts. If it a Dist. Tester with vacuum tester the battery for one powers the vac. motor. I have not seen a way to eliminate the 6volt battery, only the 2 1.5 volt flashlight batterys for the dwell meter.

Pete,can you post a link to the power supply, I can't find anything over
10 amps in the $100 dollar price range.

There were several used ones a couple months ago but the only one I see now is a new one for 145.

Check the vacuum motor plate. 10A may be enough.

You can trace the wiring from the battery cables to see what else is powered by 6 volt DC.

Can I buy the dwell/rpm gauge? The needle fell off my rpm gauge

I also have an older Sun machine and in asking questions about repair, I was told of some one near Charlotte, NC does this. I have not located him yet. Does anyone have that info?

He is in the Charlotte area and, I believe, worked directly for Sun as a tech.

Need to keep machine all togeather might get it all working sometime,
Got a 6 volt battery now,,I’ll hook up and see what amp draw is ,might tell me which way to go,,
