1934 Tudor needs a towbar - picture Hello
I would like to fit a towbar/trailer hitch to my Tudor as I want to use a trailer now and then. I know that some of you have one on their car but probably no such part for sale. I would need pictures from the bar and attachment to frame. If I have enough pictures to study, I can make one. Please send pictures from underneath and all angles. Thank you very much! Harty |

Re: 1934 Tudor needs a towbar - picture Could you order one back in the day at your Ford dealer? If so, does anyone have a picture or drawing of it that I could use to make one?

Pics of tow bar.
I originally made the main part from 25X 50 RHS but later doubled up on it. This has towed the caravan aprox 80000 klms around the country on all sorts roads, with no drama, well a small one when we first made it, I never had the gussets on the vertical attachments and on cracked ,so they are needed. I plan on making the mount under the spring U/bolts to go under both bolts so it has 4 points, but haven't go around to that yet. Caravan weigh around 900kgs and has electric brakes ,these are 12v neg earth and the 33 is 6v pos, I made an alternator driven from the caravan wheel, this feeds the 12v battery in the c/van and supply a 12v feed into the 33 for the UHF and brake controller . all has worked well . Re: 1934 Tudor needs a towbar - picture Thanks to Lawrie and Petehoovie for the pics. Before I start on building my own one question is still not answered. Could you order a tow bar in 1934 or were they all made at the local blacksmith or vehicle mechanic? I think there must have been a market so somebody must have made them in larger numbers. I have no idea if it was Ford themselves or some Auto parts emporium. Do any of you remember?
Thanks! |
Re: 1934 Tudor needs a towbar - picture It's a good question. I don't think there was a universally adopted tow hitch or ball size back then. Most things would have been home made and made to suit probably a home made trailer.
I would be interested to see if there were any commercially available setups available back in the early 30s. |
Re: 1934 Tudor needs a towbar - picture I agree Mart. If I remember correctly, most pickups in the 50's and older came without a rear bumper, much less a trailer hitch. Most I remember seeing had a home/garage built bumper, with a hitch point built into it.
