Model A Radiator Filter from Caterpillar

1 Attachment(s)
Someone asked a year ago for the CAT number for the filter that fits the 2" top hose. I finally came across mine the other day while looking for something else. Here's a picture of the filter and the numbers on the box.

Tom,

How does the strainer fit in the upper hose? I already have a thermostat in there, but a collector of trash is always a good idea.

You can slip it into the top of the hose, so the lip of the filter is against the radiator inlet, and the brass fits inside the radiator pipe. The filter lip is large enough to keep the filter from slipping through the radiator inlet pipe.

This filter will probably work to keep the big stuff from making it to the radiator, but a Gano filter will take care of the real small debris circulating in the cooling system. We have used them with great success.

The screen holes are smaller than they look in the picture. It will certainly keep any rust from plugging the radiator tubes.

Tom, how do you go about cleaning them out? Or go you have to clean them? If so, do you have to take the hose off to do it?

Yes, you'd have to drain a gallon of coolant, then remove the top hose.

I see the benefits of filtering the coolant but how do you prevent the trappings from falling backing into the head when attempting to clean the screen?

+1 for the Gano Filter - It has a lobster trap array to retain the rust particles.

What size Gano Filter would be best for the Model A radiator hose?

My thermostat is below the strainer and will trap the junk. This isn't something that needs to be removed often for cleaning. Once the rust particles are caught from some previous owner not using antifreeze, then there should be no further rusting. If someone like to run plain water, then expect more rust to form.

Hey John,
As the Gano site explains, there are 3 sizes. The 'large' size would most closely match the upper A hose id.

My wife is walking around in circles after I cut the foot out of her pantyhose to use as a strainer.:D

I tried that with a drier sock, which looked like a nylon. It must have been something else though, because it tore loose and blocked several radiator tubes. I had to borrow an inspection camera to find it and get it out of the top tank.

Which one did you purchase. On the gano site they are much more.

Doug, did you buy the large one. Do you check the screen once in a while.

Gano filters are nice, as you can see when they are getting full of crud, as they are made of clear plastic. With the hidden Cat filter (once installed), you have guess when to clean it out and it is a pain to clean the filters - both Gano and a Cat filter.

I run a Gano and like rhar it keeps the rust and you can see when it is time to clean it.
