Oil Pan Fix When my engine was built I went with the truck pan with the big oil hole and bracket on the back of the pan. After the engine was installed in my 40 I found out the later starter plate could not be installed until I removed the bracket. I carefully tried to remove the bottom part of the truck plate from the oil pan but upon removing a stubborn spotweld opened a 1/8" hole in the pan. Luckily the hole is close to the big inspection cover on the pan. I do not want to remove the pan to repair the hole; what is the best way to go? Can I carefully wireweld the hole or should I braze or solder it. Thought about JB weld but not sure it will work. Looking for opinions.

Re: Oil Pan Fix Does the pan have oil or oil residue in it?
|
Re: Oil Pan Fix can you put a nut and bolt with rubber washers on both sides? or possible put a pop rivet into the hole using JB weld as a sealer?
|
Re: Oil Pan Fix Yes there is oil residue in pan but with the large cover I can get in there with a rag and some brake cleaner and to remove. The hole is is about an 1" from the large cover pointing towards the starter motor. I could put an 1/8 steel pop rivet in hole but not sure about sealing properties of JB weld with heat expansion/contraction

Re: Oil Pan Fix I have used JB weld on a small pin hole in my pan with great sucess.

Re: Oil Pan Fix Put the pop rivet in and JB weld. It will be there for ever. Walt

Re: Oil Pan Fix Thanks Walt, put a steel rivet in and spread a level coat of JB weld over it and will paint newly exposed pan with POR 15 paint. One I fire the enigine up for the first time and get it warm will check for leaks.

Re: Oil Pan Fix clean the back side & weld it over head welding is not hard . if you can,t do it take it to a muffler shop why bother with all the glue stuff which can give a proulbem if you weld it it fixed right for good
|
Re: Oil Pan Fix Do not weld on anything after useing brake cleaner. I would weld it with a gas welder.
|
Re: Oil Pan Fix I worked at a shop that asked me to weld up a hole in the pan. I refused to put an open flame or anything glowing near the oily residue in the pan. Someone else started to weld up the hole and there was an explosion, but fortunately no one was hurt.

Re: Oil Pan Fix Brake cleaner and welding will kill ya dead dead dead.

That's a pretty broad statement, could you please enlighten us, and tell us more about exactly how it will kill a person. Are you talking about fire/explosion, OR toxic dangers ? Inquiring minds want to know.......;) . |

Be glad to. Chlorinated compounds such as brake cleaners decompose to become phosgene when exposed to extreme heat. The use of argon gas may also enhance the conversion by sheilding the process from exposure to the air. Phosgene is an organic gas as is Mustard Gas, and was used extensively as an anti-personell weapon during WWI. |
Re: Oil Pan Fix Years ago I was trying to pretty up a Chevy ram horn exhaust manifold and while grinding off a titty (yes, I said titty), I ground a hole into the manifold. Not having another I thought I would try to patch it with JBWeld. That manifold is still in use.

Re: Oil Pan Fix Just exactly how hard is it to remove the pan? Good grief if you were on the side of the road it's OK to OBAMA rig the thing, but otherwise...

Re: Oil Pan Fix Really, Rat?! Here's a news flash for you: "It's the 21st century". You can quit acting like a hill billy bigot now.

Re: Oil Pan Fix Off colour comments aside, it is a valid point, it's not a roadside fix, why not pull the motor and do a proper repair, ensuring all the parts used are compatible with each other.
It's only a hobby after all, this is fun, right?? Mart. |
Re: Oil Pan Fix You're from England! What do you know?:D
Comments like what I responded to are totally uncalled from and push my button. There are political and racist overtones to what was posted by a totally new guy to this forum. He needs to have respect for others' viewpoints by not posting his own narrow perspective that he decided to draw upon and invoke on an otherwise benign thread subject. I hate to say it, but it is more than likely a reflection on the poor public education system in my country. I have always had respect for those overseas who well ahead of us have learned the lessons that we are still struggling with in this country. But, other than that, I have no opinion on the matter.;) |
