Master Cylinder & Left Hand Parking Brake on Early 28
 

Hello Folks,
I'm new to the board and to the model A world. I just bought an early 28 Toudor that has been fabricated to hydraulic brakes in the distant past. The brakes work fine but the install is not to my standards so I'm going to replace some components. The master cylinder is the single reservoir type; all the conversion kits that are on the market also have single reservoir masters. Is there a reason why a dual reservoir master cylinder is not being used for this application? I want to this car to be safe and a dual would give me peace of mind. Also, this car is an early 28; the parking brake is on the left kick panel. The hydraulic brakes have backing plates that are non compatible with the stock park brake operation so this car has been driven a long time with out a parking/emergency brake. I'd like to get this the brake lever to do it's job from this original location. Has anybody seen a solution to this condition. I have some ideas on some solutions but would like to hear about the one that is currently working.

I can't help you with the hydraulic brake questions. The early Model A's that had the handle on the left did not have emergency/parking brakes. The left side mounted handle only set the service brakes. It wasn't until very late 28 and early 29 that separate emergency/parking brakes were available.

Thanks Dave, that's good to know. What I'd like to do next is get that left hand brake lever working as a parking brake with the hydraulic baking plates (they are not stock A plates). I can get a cable to operate from the backing plates to about the middle of the car so what I'm looking for is a solution to connecting the lever to the cables and still keep the brake lever on the left.

You could run an enclosed cable over to your center pull. You might need a lever to increase the pulling power. Google 1948 F1 parking brake diagram for some ideas. Here is one I found;

You can use this kit (Snyder's number) A-2864-X for adding parting brake. You will need to install a parking brake cross shaft with a lever added to arm on driver side with a link to the parking brake handle.

I have to ask: How early is your early '28 Tudor? Engine number? Frame number? Photo of the hood and door pillar? Photo of the front axle near the backing plate? Etc. If you are unable to post photos you could send them to me at [email protected]

That diagram with the F1 set up is really helpful. This early brake lever does not have a cross shaft so the Snynder kit requires lots a fab work and hole drilling on this frame. I was thinking of a way to attach a rod to my left hand lever that would actuate a cable pull. The lever in the center of the frame diagram along with the other cable connections are giving me some ideas that are getting me closer to a solution. Keep these great ideas coming in and I'll have something cool to post when I get it nailed down.

Maybe hook a line lock up to make it work off the handle....just a thought.....
