Spring Prep Just got a new rear spring fir the 31. It is in raw steel. Any special prep, other than painting, required before installation ?

Re: Spring Prep Solvent clean, spray with gloss black paint and install spring covers wet with 140 gear oil.

Re: Spring Prep I put new springs on my 30 CCPU last fall and there are two important things that should be done to achieve the smoothest ride possible. First, the springs should be taken apart and the sharp edges at the ends of each leaf should be rounded off so they don't dig into the surface of the leaf below. Second, the surfaces of the leafs that come into contact with each other (top of lower leaf and bottom of upper leaf) should be painted with a graphite based paint like "Slip Plate" or "EZ-Slide" to ensure good spring movement. Then re-assemble the spring, wipe off any excess graphite paint with kerocene, then paint with a good spray paint. I know this sounds like a lot of work, but you'll really enjoy the smooth ride.

Re: Spring Prep I just want to add use extreme caution with that rear spring,you can't always relay on that center bolt holding it together.I would chain it or large c clamp it before you are ready to install it.

Re: Spring Prep The more lube on the spring leaves, the more you're relying on good working shocks for the smooth ride. Some friction is part of the equation.
