Starter question:

Went to start the A today and the starter wouldn’t engage, so I took the starter off and noticed that the spring on the bendix drive was broken. My question is can I replace the spring or do I have to replace the entire bendix drive?

Thanks, Doug

Re: Starter question:

If the Bendix isn't obviously damaged you should be able to replace just the spring . I've done it before .

Replace it, you might find an old one somewhere as they use the same parts on cars for years and tractors. The guy who rebuilds them for me used a bendix off of a tractor and I couldn't see any difference. Just make sure no broken parts went down in the bell housing.

Common problem, replace spring. Keep a spare. Make sure bolts aren’t bent. Always retard spark to start. Leading cause of starter damage is kick back.

Order new keepers for the bolt heads. Stops the bolts from backing out down the road. I had it happen to me.

Re: Starter question:

I would order new spring, two bolts and the two special spring lockdown washers. The two bolts just in case the threads in your originals are damaged. The bolts ans washers come in two sizes, (5/16" and 3/8"). Make sure you get the correct size that matches your bendix.
