1940 Ford coupe headliner installation

Do I need to remove the rear glass in my coupe to glue the headliner material or can i stuff the material into the rubber gasket with a little contact cement to help hold it in until I screw the rear garnish molding down? The headliner material is white vinyl.

In the past I have put a small amount of glue around the outer metal edge of the frame just next to the gasket. I do not make any cuts to the material around the windows. Once it is secured with the glue I put on the garnish molding and tighten( just snug) it down. I then use a razor blade or razor knife and go around the inner edge of the molding and cut out the window openings. A word of caution, be careful and use the proper length of screws for the garnish. Too long of a screw can go in and touch the edge of the window glass and cause it to break. Learned that lesson the hard way.

Rear windows must be removed. Glue the lining in very well. I prefer 3M contact cement. Once it is very dry, using a razor, remove any material from the edge that the glass (seal) would push against.

There's a lot of "pull" back there and as such, I'd be fearful of the 'tuck" approach being strong enough to last.

The window molding is designed to hold the windows in place, NOT hold the headliner.

YES, you must remove the 1940 Ford coupe rear window in order to install the headliner correctly. A Fordbarn search (Headliner Installation) reveals tons of info. on how to install the headliner. This will help.
