Value of Standard vs Deluxe Roadster

I have a friend who is helping a widow sell her '29 roadster. I've not seen the car, only a few photos. He asked me what price she should ask and that is difficult without seeing and driving the car. However, it appears to be a standard roadster rather than a Deluxe. I think I've read threads on our forum saying the standard is worth more than the deluxe because it is more rare. If that is true, then the asking price might be adjusted accordingly after I see the car. Opinions anyone?

There was no deluxe roadster in 1929.

Yes rare, extremely .....
Ford never made a Deluxe Roadster in 1929,....... no matter how many white walls, side mount spares or chrome trash bolted on it !

Sorry Grand Ma, no condo in Florida or 'free' graduate school for the kiddies.

As far as original 29 roadsters go, there were NO deluxe 29 roadsters only standard. A number of people have put various unauthorized/non authentic accessories such as side mounts, cowl lights, pleated interiors, stone guards, 30/31 deluxe paint colors, white walls, and etc. on a standard roadster and called it a deluxe. I have seen chromed windshield frames, posts, and even top bows. I am sure I will offend some but with all this kind of stuff what you have is a pimped up standard roadster. Some might like some or all of that stuff and that is OK it's their "A" but understand those changes do not make it original or a 29 deluxe roadster.

I did not know there weren't any Deluxe roadsters built in 1929. Glad I asked. Thanks for the quick responses.

And I'd say, a '30-'31 Roadster will be worth a tad more than a '28-'29 Roadster.

I understand a '30-'31 cost more to restore too.

Just to clarify, side mounts and cowl lights were Ford-authorized accessories although cars with them were unusual. I agree an over-accessorized car is not authentic.

Cowl lights were only for cabriolets and fordors in 29. The cowl is different. People like to put them on their roadsters especially and I'm sure a 1929 dealer would be happy to put anything on the car to stop you from going to a Chevy dealer. I'd bet he would put the front fenders on the back if that's what you wanted.

You could have side lights installed on any car in 1929 by the dealer.

Cabriolet, Fordor and Town Car cowls do not have the curved "coupe pillar" like other body styles, but I don't think that makes a difference as far as mounting cowl lights. The lights were standard on Cabriolets, Town Cars, and some (but I don't think all) Fordors. However, they can be installed on any body style. As you say, dealers likely would do so to make a sale and/or a few extra bucks. That's why I said they were Ford-authorized accessories.

The DLX roadsters were only made in 30-31 and most 30s were STD. But very few STDs were made in 31 which makes them quite rare and therefore more valuable. Plus during the 60s-80s many of these STDs were Deluxified.

"Deluxified" :D That's a great word - can apply to any over-restoration.
