starting my A tool collection
 

I have collected quite a few tools to "go with" our '21 T Touring. Now that we have our '28 Coupe I will start this weekend, at a local show/swap meet, to gather some A tools. I have a grease gun that I suppose is period correct, though is doesn't have Ford stamped on it It is an Alemite Model 6550.:)

If you want the tools you collect for your Model A to be correct, you might consider getting a revised copy of the Model A Restoration Guidlines and Judging Standards from either MARC or MAFCA. It contains detailed descriptions and photos of all tools used and years of manufacture that apply. Then you bring the pages that apply with you when you hit the swaps. Way too much info to memorize. There is so much correct info on the Model A tools, just look it up. Millions of A's built so tool items are not rare in US ; imagine how difficult it is if you live in the rest of the world. Your grease guns are later V8 [6550] & the other is non Ford. Cheers

Ditto Post #2, There are Many Many people at Auto Fea Markets, E-Bay, Yard Sales etc, that will tell you its for a Model A or T.. A lot of them are 100% wrong, Do as Mike says to be safe.. And some are Very Rare !!

Agreed!!!

The RG/JS section on tools is not only fascinating reading, but for putting together a complete and accurate tool set the Guidelines would be essential...

If that's the way you plan on going, I would also strongly recommend that you do a FB search so you can get with Don Turley. He helped me get a super set together, right down to the correct owner's manual for April 1931...

The correct grease gun for 1928 until mid-1929 is the bottom one in the attached photo. It will be marked "ALEMITE LUBRICATOR" and below that will be "THE BASSICK MFG CO" It has a fine straight knurl on the cap.


By mid-1929 the second line was changed to read "ALEMITE CORPORATION" and the cap had a coarse straight knurl. This is the middle one in the photo.


The top one in the photo is the Canadian grease gun marked with "STEWART-WARNER-ALEMITE CORP, CANADA LTD".

I've bought several grease guns at Swap meets but none of them work. Do any of the suppliers sell rebuild kits?

Best tool to start with is a mobile phone, gives you piece of mind in case of a no fix situation.

If an original Model A grease gun is complete, then there is nothing to "rebuild". They probably are just clogged up with dried grease and need to be cleaned. This is in reference to the Model A grease gun. If it is a different grease gun, then I don't know.

Thanks for the information Don. I have three grease guns, two have Alemite Corp. on the barrel and one looks newer and has nothing on the barrel. They are all clogged so I'll try to clean them out.

Gary WA, The engine has been changed, but the gas tank date is 5-25-28.
The period correct grease gun I have doesn't seem to work well either. I have cleaned up the outside and cleaned the old grease out of the barrel, but didn't clean out the pipe and fitting. I think I'll try that and see how it works. Thing is, as many fittings as a Model A has, by the time each one gets a squirt or two you'll have to refill the gun a couple of times!

Oil Can question... I have seen the oil can holding bracket on the firewall on Model T's. Where was the Oil Can mounted on A's ? or was it ?
