Kink pins
 

I have a friend that after installing new king pins the brake actuator housings do not fit properly. The housings have are approximately 3/16 from completely entering the pins. I don’t think the housings are too short but??. Could it be a problem with the pins. I would like to replace my pins but I don’t need these kind of problems. Are there different vendors out there or do all pins come from the same barrel.

Sounds like a quality problem. Many of these items are foreign sourced - which is where quality goes to take a vacation.

I once bought a one piece crankshaft pulley new. Found it .005 too small in ID to fit over the end of the crank. It was returned the next day and promptly replaced - all except for the drive to the post office and the box & tape covered by the vendor.

a lot of repro`s are crap, and at the wrong angle. sometimes if you leave the lock pin out of the axle until you install the brake aviator. you can turn the king pin and it goes together a lot easier. then install your lock pin.

32, 33 and 34 pins are same except for the angle where the locking pin goes through. Do you possibly have the later model pins??

I had that problem just a couple hours ago with new king pins. To locate the interference, I coated the perimeter of the brake actuator housing that enters the hemisphere of the king pin with machinist blue and wiggled it around to find the interference. In my case, the machined annular recession in the top of the king pin was slightly under sized, the outer end of the shaft housing was slightly out of round and the pawl was interfering against the inside of the ball. I removed about a half thou from each interfering surface at a time until all fit without interference.

Had a similar situation with a friend’s ‘29 truck. With NOS king pins installed, the brake actuating levers did not fully seat in the “ice cream scoops”. We found the problem to be badly worn and loose spring perches which allowed the newer front spring to “pull the perches toward the center line of the chassis, creating gap between arms and “scoops”. Replaced perches and everything fit as it should
