1946 Ford Mercury Exterior Mirror The exterior mirror that sits just where the chrome trim line runs from hood through to rear.
These mirrors are fitted after the small section of chrome trim is removed. Are these available from regular outlets? Or to source likes of ebay or similar? Looking for one for LHS. Similar fitted to models 46 to 48? Phil NZ |
Re: 1946 Ford Mercury Exterior Mirror 3 Attachment(s)
Yes Phil I have them on mine. Ex Bob Drake. The left one is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard, ie you can't see it or use it from a RHD car, but i didn't have the chrome strip and at the time they as were not available repop. The mirror just fills that gap. The drivers one is functional. how about posting some pics of your new Merc.

Havent picked it up yet. Going down to Mosgiel Tuesday to collect it. Looking forward to the road trip via Central Otago on the way back to Christchurch. Has the mirror on drivers side already and may forget about passenger side as has the chrome strip there already in view of your comments. Brought it sight unseen apart from pics on Trade Me. But spoke to PO who did all the work on it. He is from N I a motor reconditioner. Phil NZ |

Enjoy the trip GB |
Re: 1946 Ford Mercury Exterior Mirror I just removed my cowl mounted mirrors as the right one could not be seen from the drivers seat and the left one was not much better. I now have a clip on mirror on the left and soon to get another for the right side. The new one gives me much better visibility. The trim strips for the cowl were available from Drake. May not look as cool but I can see now.

Re: 1946 Ford Mercury Exterior Mirror I just put some aftermarket swan neck mirrors on my '48 coupe. They work great, unfortunately you have to drill some extra holes in the doors to mount them. The cowl mount mirrors are basically decoration. The ones that mount on the door lip can easily chip the paint, so finding the right mirrors can be a challenge.

So it seems that as mentioned cowl mounted only for looks not practical. So probably since LHS is not there and chrome strip is better to go with good swan neck or similar. Already have a couple of door mount mirrors so maybe can try these also. Thanks, Phil |
