Universal joint

I rebuilt a universal joint that I purchased through ebay using a kit from Brattons (cross, bushings, and clips). The rebuilt joint has about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of play across each yoke. Is this normal? When I bolted it to the transmission drive, put on the rear cap, and rotated the joint, I noticed a sound like metal rubbing on metal. I assume its the joint rubbing against the inside of the cap. Will this go away once the engine/transmission is hooked up to the drive shaft/torque tube putting the drive train in alignment?

Yes, it is normal, the driveshaft supports the rear of the u-joint.

I squirt some oil on the moving parts of the u-joint and work it around, then pack lots of grease around it. After it's installed and covered, I remove the speedometer driven gear and start pumping grease into the housing until it comes out the speedometer gear opening.
