Trans issue?

Folks,
I have been driving my 39 Ford Coupe around and I think I have a bad 1 to 2 synchro issue. When shifting from 1st to 2nd it grinds. The slower speed I shift at the less it grinds. From 2nd to 3rd, no issue. Going from 3rd to 1st when I come to a complete stop, no issue. I’ve tried double clutching, no help. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Tom

I had an issue with my 47, turned out to be worn pins in the external linkage not allowing full clutch release.

Start with the simple first.

I will definitely check the clutch adjustment. I thought the clutch would be disengaging because I could shift into 1st with no issues?

I had the same problem a few yrs. ago. It was the synchro(s). Did this just start, or has it been gradually getting worse to the point that it is really noticeable now? - F F

I should have mentioned that I just purchased the car 2 weeks ago and it did it from day 1.

I’d try changing the oil in the transmission. That also gives you a look at the old oil . If synchronizes are worn you should see it in the oil.

How is the shift from 3 to 2 ?? The 2-3 syncro blocker ring is different than the 1-2 and 3-2 which are the same blocker ring. The two rings are bronze and can crack or wear out. You have the later syncros 39-48 and not the early one 33-39. Get it fixed because bad grinding shifts do damage to the cluster and 2nd gear. replacing a cluster gear can be expensive depending upon what cluster you have. Mac VanPelt has a great transmission book. If you want to fix it yourself I recommend the book. Check out his web site he also has good used gears.
If your ready to repair the first step is to drain and look for pieces in the oil. Then open the floor and remove the top of the transmission so you can see what you have. Take photos and post some.

The two synchro rings are identical. The one on the second gear side gets the most wear. You’re using this synchro ring when you shift from 1st to 2nd......AND when you shift from 3rd back down into 2nd. Your ring is almost totally worn out and should be replaced. Naturally, while the transmission is apart to do this, you should replace the 3rd gear synchro ring too. And while you’re in there, the bearings, the thrust washers, snap rings, and so on. In other words it’s time for a good old rebuild.
