90 degree oil filter hits oil return pipe
 

Has anyone run into the problem of the 90 degree oil filter is not sticking out far enough from the block.

What happens is the oil filter hits the oil return pipe and can not be screwed in to the adapter.

The 90 degree I bought on line and the # on the unit is 08002089.

Several filters other than the big, FL-1A that holds .88 quarts of oil will fit the same side mount:

Fram PH7328, 3 5/8D x 3 1/4 H .6quart
Fram PH3614, 3"D x 3 3/8 H .4quart
Fram PH3600, 3"D x 5"H .6quart

If you're not a Fram fan, look up the conversions to another brand.
All these filters will fit either directly on the side cover in place of the FL1A or on the 90 degree adapters.

There has also been some talk on this forum (different thread) concerning the backflow preventer flaps in oil filters. Almost all spin-on oil filters have a "backflow preventer" rubber flap valve of sorts that keeps the oil from draining in horizontal apps. A 90 degree adapter is NOT needed to keep the filter full, but they prevent a big mess on removal, and allow 100% pre-fill when changing filters on the side cover mounts.

The ONLY call to remove or defeat it would be if you were running one of the secondary bypass type filters which generate no pressure into the filter. If your filter feeds from the typical side cover mount with an internal tube to the pump outlet it has significant positive pressure. Removing the "backflow preventer" is actually a hindrance, as 1) pre-filling and installing a new filter is a big mess when you go to spin it on, and 2) if your filter is horizontal it will drain every time the engine is stopped, requiring the engine to run with no oil output until the filter fills.

Do you have a picture of your 90° adapter?

The 90° adapter I have is off a Mustang (maybe other models too?) and I use a WIX 51515 filter (already painted black, just peel off label).. It is a tight fit, ~⅛" between filter and oil return pipe. Could your pipe be bent out? Causing it to interfere with the filter?

If your oil return pipe is installed backwards it will stick out further than it should.

Try using Motorcraft Fl400s
Same thread and gasket size smaller diameter it will clear the return pipe

This just might be the wrong product for the A.

I am using WIX 51515.

Carl I was not aware that the pipe would go backwards. I actually looked at it and thought well maybe I did install it backwards, and looked at the pipe angles and said no, who me, install something backwards.

It needs about another 3/4" more from the oil pipe. Its not the length but the width.

Tomorrow I will reverse the pipe and see what happens.

Old31, I was using the Wix 51515 filter on mine. The 90 degree adapter was a Ford Racing part that I probably bought from Speedway. Don’t remember the part number. I do know that I have a box full of other ones I bought that didn’t work.

When I put an exhaust header on the engine it wouldn’t work so I now have a remote mounted one.

It appears like the adapter that Y-Blockhead is using sticks out further than the one that old31 shows.

Methinks the Jeep part is your problem, NOT what filter you're using.

I have the same adapter and used a smaller diameter and shorter filter. Works great.

The adapter your using is the Jeep part and if I remember right there only 80 deg not 90
the Ford ones look to stand off a little more also. you can find them on 70's vans and the Mustang II 's that had a V8 if you don't want new

Both sizes fit on mine..but an easy cure for yours is the smaller K&N (shown)
