1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... 13 Attachment(s)
DON'T LEAVE IT OUT IN THE RAIN!!! Wish I was there when this '39 transmission was removed to make sure it was put inside rather then left out in the elements for who knows how long. Found this last week locally inside a garage but when the shifter didn't move I suspected problems. Was going to pull the top anyway but was really bummed with what I found inside. Lots of corrosion and even the tower rails were frozen solid. Got the tower apart earlier this week and spent most of the day on disassembly and cleaning the rest. Was hoping to find the cluster gear intact at least because there was still gear oil inside and added pics of it to get opinions on if it could be used. Some of the other gears and the synchronizer assembly will be ok too.

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... Inside of cluster and roller bearings had no corrosion, was concerned about the small chip pictured.

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... Clean it all up and use it. The amount of mileage most of our old cars do the gears will outlive you. In my opinion that small chip is minor and should give no problems.

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... We’ve seen worse.....much worse. I wouldn’t lose a lot of sleep over the small flaw in your cluster gear. Maybe dress the edges of it to reduce the chances of it breaking away.

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... I agree with the other comments, the chip and flaw are nothing to worry about. I would round off all the edges around both to prevent stress risers. A nice sharp and small file would do it.

Actually bought this for another Barnmember but got his voicemail and found out later he had just bought 10 transmissions from someone and didn't need it. Since I really don't need it I've moved it to the swap meet section in case a member is looking for one.

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... A case with good thrust face at the rear of the counter shaft and no cracks from the front counter shaft bore are good to go.

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... I put ours in white vinegar for a week. helps a lot. We have 3 frozen trannys coming to Hershey. Rust is original : costs more

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... I'd use Evaporust on all of those parts. Vinegar will work, but it is an acid and if you forget your parts for a few days, start looking for new parts. With Evaporust, it's "set it and forget it".

Re: 1939 Ford Transmission DON'T...... I know that water in the oil corrodes the hardened steel used in the gears (transmission AND rears) like crazy!! And, since water is heavier than the oil, it goes to the bottom and gets the cluster gear really bad.
