fifth tank sender think said had new resistance style still reading high close to full,,,,,,battry reads 6.30v,,, at sender reads 6.30v, when read through sender when hooked up see 3.5v any help appreciated dennis

was suggested to put a resister inline 50 ohms put one in and read real low was suggested to put a lower ohms resis in,,, working on that now but my question is what should the resistor wattage be or doesnt that matter..... know if too low may overheat.......???? dennis

Resistance sending units are a pain to get to work correctly with an original gauge. Think it is going to be trial and effort, and it is never going to work correctly over the full range from empty to full. You need to determine what is important to you, such as empty, and work from there. A lot of the corrections can be made by bending/adjusting the float arm.

Tony, Your King Seally gas tank sending unit does not operate on the Ohms principle and neither does the fuel gauge. Adding a resistor will not solve your problem if you want the gauge to read accurately. This topic has been discussed many, many times. If you do a Fordbarn search on "GAS TANK SENDING UNITS" you will discover tons of pertinent info. to help you solve the problem.

First thing you should do is remove the sending unit and make sure the float is not cracked and full of gas. Secure unit in a vise and then carefully pry off the top of the sender and make sure the contacts are clean and the carbon resistor is properly in place. DO NOT BREAK THAT RESISTOR as no one makes them. Then explore the various remedies found in your SEARCH. Here's what it looks like inside.

Here's one for sale that you could make fit your tank by bending the float arm. Not cheap but ,NOS units are very hard to find.

Tony: Please let us know how accurate your fuel gauge readings are after you install
the resistors. It would be great if they work. Hope so.

Before you start modifying the sender, remove the flange mounting screws and rotate the sender while you observe the gauge. If you find the right place, mark the flange and the tank, transfer the results to the flange and drill new mounting holes in the flange. DO NOT drill near the open gas tank! The resistance units will never be as accurate as the K/S senders, but with patience they will come close. The float must be away from baffles and other parts of the tank to work properly.

I've had a 53 & a 52 Victoria that both needed senders. Neither one was ever correct even after many times bending & checking. Mine stays on full a long time & when it gets below a 1/4 tank i put 8-9 gallons in it....never over fill & never run out,& keeps this crap fuel fresh. There you have it...my 2+1/2 cents worth.

On my '41 p-u a prior owner had installed a repop sender so the gauge always read near F.
I experimented until I added a resistor in series that made the gauge read E when I had 2 gallons left in the tank. This is really all I need to know when to stop and put in about 12 gal. I think the resistor was either 35 or 50 ohms, 5 watt.
Your resistance may vary :)

19Fordy and all interested put a 25 ohm r in and read just above 1/4 the 25 was a variable resister set for 25 since i had a 10 ohm ordered waited for it put in today and it reads about 1/2 tank which i think where the tank is.... time to fill it and see where it goes.... then if works at all will put the 25 back in move it to 10 and see where it goes from therewith tweaking Dennis

the irony of this whole durn thing is when you purchase these new senders after market they say on instructions FOR ORIGINAL GAUGES AND TANKS ONLY....................i am on num 6 and not buying anymore just want to read as suggested on low fuel...........

Just a suggestion from experience with these sending units: Just because it reads close to accurate at one level, don't depend on it to tell you when it is about out of fuel. I haven't had one to be reasonably accurate across the range. It might read 1/4 tank when you run out, or it might read empty with 6 gallons left. I carry a 2 gallon can of gas until I am comfortable with the empty reading.

40cpe: Just curious. What kind of container do you use to carry that spare 2 gallons to prevent fumes inside your trunk or interior? I am worried about an explosion or fire.

Chased this rabbit on my 52 F1 and finally got it "close" by adjusting the float arm. To show how confident I was with the repair... Whenever it got down to a 1/4 tank reading I always stopped to fill it up... Besides stopping at gas stations always gives other folks the opportunity to enjoy the car. Chap

I used a common sealed plastic gas can. Didn't smell any fumes while I carried it. I don't carry a spare tire and it fit snuggly in the spare tire well. Yeah, I know the potential dangers.
