FOG LIGHTS AND tURN SIGNALS on '39 Ford I bought some Amber 5" Fog Lights with brackets for the front bumper supports and plan on buying some smaller amber lights for the rear. My plan is to install a fuse block on the inside or outside of the firewall and use it to supply power to the newly installed lights and hopefully a turn signal switch on the steering column. The plan is to have the 5" Fog lights on all the time while driving and the turn signals only when needed.
Anyone tried this type of set up before? Advice greatly appreciated for my 1939 Ford Convertible with a 12 volt positive ground system. I reckon I could tie in the rear taillights to the turn signal switch assuming clear easy to follow instructions come with the turn signal. My rear light bulbs have the correct bulbs in them already. I believe none of the Turn Signals come with a "cancelling" feature built in. Advice on which turn signals are the best, also appreciated. Many of the streets and roads where I live and drive my Ford have tree canopy's over them which means that I am driving in the shadows a lot. Hopefully this will make for a safer driving experience. Had a friend who moved here from Portland, OR and he said it was like driving in tunnels! |
Re: FOG LIGHTS AND tURN SIGNALS on '39 Ford 1 Attachment(s)
My concern about adding secondary lights to your '39, or any other vintage vehicle is that generally the added lights don't look right.
The tail lights on a '39 are all ready dual filament lights, stop and tail, very easy to hook these lights up to turn signals. Of course one concern can be brightness. To improve the brightness of the light clean the inside of the light housing, paint it white, white is more reflective than silver. Check all of the wiring to the tail lights for a good clean secure ground and power source. The front lights present a problem. There are several small LED type lights that can be mounted on the front bumper, on the lower edge of the fender, etc. I have a '39 conv, the other brand, that has very similar tear drop tail lights as the Ford does. I cleaned the light up and painted it white inside. The 12v tail lights are very bright on tail and stop. For added safety I had some custom LED lights made that would fit within the bumper over-rides. I used red for the rear and amber for the front. The aux lights are hooked up to turn, stop and 4-way hazard. I have received many positive comments over the years for my lights. I am putting a similar light system on my '36 Ford coupe using a column mounted aftermarket turn switch. |

Re: FOG LIGHTS AND tURN SIGNALS on '39 Ford I used the fog lights as turn signals on my Model A when I had it. They're on my 40 now and will be wired up this wiinter after the whole car gets re-wired.

Re: FOG LIGHTS AND tURN SIGNALS on '39 Ford I used fog lights on the front of a '37 for turn signal lights and they worked just fine. You can't miss them when they are in use.

Re: FOG LIGHTS AND tURN SIGNALS on '39 Ford I have fog light turn sigs on my 34, I purchased them because they came set up to be used as parking and turn signal, 12v dual filament bulbs. I left the parking lights in the headlights (standard car). I also use 12v led tail lights, very bright, you can't have enough light! I am using a "Blinkie" self canceling on a timer. (a bit pricey) but all work well. Ken

I used fog lights from the pre-sealed beam era on my '38. I replaced the sockets to use 1157 bulbs and have parking and turn signals wired to them.

For rear turn signals I used ford accessory back up lights with amber 6v bulb and made a reflector out of clear orange kitchen cleaner spray bottle which I placed behind the bulb. For the front I dual filamented the park lights.
