1951 Merc front brake plates

Ready to put new shoes on the front and noticed that a couple of the rub nubs are worn and one has a burr on the outside edge. Can these still be used?

The new shoes can hang up on those wear grooves.

You need to build up the worn spots and grooves with weld and then grind them flat.

Thanks I have a mig welder that should be able to do that. Also where is a good source for these if the welding does not work out?

Welding it up should work fine.

Thanks is there a way I can send you a pic to look at?
Also I went back to my OLD messages and found one that I had sent you re your 39 Ford St'd and that I had one as well. Do you still have yours?

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates

I have a 38 std, not a 39, sorry if that got confused somewhere along the line. Backing plates are fairly heavy metal and easy to weld on. But you are more than welcome to send a photo if you wish, [email protected]

I've welded tons of plates since the '60s, never found a case it not to work.

Should be no problem; but if you do not feel comfortable with the process, send them my way and I'll take care of it for you.

I'll send you some pics. I guess my question is how much "pride" do the rub points need from the base of the inner plate?

The wear is usually toward the outer edge of the pads, never seen any wore bad enough to loose all the original surface.

No "pride", just flush with the inboard original surface.

This is one of those things that I use brass on. The brazed area seems to last longer than the original steel.

Easy fix but if you want an complete front brake assembly, including drums as a spare, I have the ones off my 51 Merc.

Fixed mine using Stellite weld rod to virtually eliminate possibility of wear.

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates

Who knows how many years these old car have gone without any lubriplate being applied to those pads. Shade tree mechanics seldom ever applied anything to them when performing a brake job.

New photo to post for Keith. Appears to me there is a fairly small area that needs addressed (welded in and dressed down) right where the edge of the brake shoe rides.

Hi Rich where in MN are you located? I'm in Afton.
Finally getting to the brake plates.
Do I cover weld the entire pad or just a bead on the outer edge?
thanks
hoffer
