Rust Reformer Paint
 

Does anyone have any experience with Rust-Oleum's Rust Reformer Paint? It comes in a rattle-can and is a flat black paint that "instantly converts rust to a protected paintable surface". I got mine at Walmart in the automotive section.

It looks like it would be good for frames and other rusty places on a car. I am thinking of using it on a World War ll jeep trailer.

Its meh. Works OK but darn near have to pool it on the surface so it seeps into the pits. Works better if you scrape all the loose stuff off but cant scrape down in pits hence needing to pool it.

So try it but dont have high hopes...

Years ago, after I retired, I got a part time job at Ace Hardware. They carried a product called "Extend." Came in a rattle can. It changed iron Oxide (rust) to Iron Phosphate. It left a black, but paintable surface.

The caveat with coatings that convert or encapsulate rust is that they work as designed when applied to a rusted surface. If applied to bare metal they may not adhere very well and may peel off later on. The challenge is in treating surfaces that have a mix of rusty areas and bare metal. I usually try to eliminate as much of the rust as possible, convert the ferrous iron to iron phosphate with a phosphoric acid type product, rinse with water to remove excess acid, rinse with acetone to remove residual water, then hit it with primer as soon as it is dry.

I was thinking of trying it in liquid form Walmart has it in 8oz bottles.I could clean off the dirt and crud and then paint it on. I hope it can penetrate the rust and encapsulate it.
