In the process of replacing my fan I was thinking about changing the 4 studs for the water pump to the new bolts that look original. They say you can remove the pump without removing the radiator. My big question is how hard is it to remove the four studs? Sometimes I hate to mess with something that isn't broke. What would you guys do? Thanks again Ron

Funny you should ask this question today. I just got through helping my buddy do this on a 1930 Sedan. 3 came out easy. 1 broke off and we are still working on getting it out.

if it was me i would replace them with the origional, but for me it would probable break them all off! but that is just my luck

Keep the original studs, replace the fan with an aluminum 2 blade. The 2 blade fan allows you to remove the waterpump by removing the hood but without removing the radiator. Just pull the radiator forward, rotate the 2 blade so it's horizontal and the waterpump will come right out.

I replaced my 4 studs with the new bolts without any problems at all. I applied some liquid wrench on them and let it soak in for a few hours. The studs came out easily with vise grips.

Yes, totally agree. Have a try using penetrating oil and either visegrips, or good pliers adjacent to the block, if they don't want to budge easily, leave them for if/when you have to have the radiator out,. As always if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If you've got a snyder's catalog (or go on line=waterpump) pg A-127 ,right column, p/n A-8501-MBM 1928-31 $5.50 set. I have them but haven't installed yet.

Bolts that are machined to look like the original studs and nuts. Makes removal of the water pump much easier with the radiator on the car. Sold in sets of four. U.S.A. Snyder's Part # A-8501-MBM

Do my eyes deceive me or is that an O-ring that I see? I do, however, believe the star locks are going a little to far. Oh well. :p

Well these have been available for some time!
And, if you ever have had to 'tear down' your radiator/hood/whatever else....just to get the B/O fan out...well it wouldn't take long to see where this 'little' invention is qenious. No O-ring..just some permatex/schmutchem seal as usual !

I was a cheapskate, and made my own by lok-titing (or krazy-gluing, I forget) nuts to the stock studs.

I have really never had that much of a problem removing a water pump, except with the four bladed style fan.

I just removed the old studs from my 30 coupe. Two on bottom came out easy but the two on top were tuff. Vicegrips were useless...i used 2 of the nuts that came off the stud...jammed one against the other and soaked the stud with lots of PB Blaster. It took a while but I got them. Used those new "fake" studs from Snyders.

Getting a stud out of a casting that has broken off flush usually can be removed by the following method:
1. Take a flat washer that has a hole in it that matches the diameter of the broken stud.
2. Tac weld the flat washer to the end of the stud in a couple of places.
3. Weld a nut to the flat washer and then back the broken stud out with a box wrench.

Removing studs you have to be prepared to break one. Then?? You have to be prepared to get the broken one out.

Mine from brattons came with lock washers and no o rings.

They work great and have had them on three cars. No one has ever noticed them.

I love them because they make life MUCH easier now that I'm an expert on water pump replacement. Knock on wood that I don't have to change another one on the side of the road.

i have them on 2 cars with lockwashers and no orings also... i think they would even fool the fine point judges:D

The amazing thing is that no matter where you start, the first three will come out easy-and the fourth one breaks off.
